World's southernmost Orthodox Chapel

Post by Barbara »

A recent article highlighting the Holy Trinity Chapel overlooking the Russian base in Antarctica appeared in the New York Times and excerpted by the Kansas City Star.

Two nice pictures are found here : of the ethereal looking chapel itself, which was made from logs shipped all the way from Siberia, and the MP priest ringing the bells.

Services are carried on for the 14 or so staff of the Russian base.
It would be interesting to see their Nativity in Antarctica. The NYT sent their reporter back in November, too early, unfortunately for some even more striking photos. We'll settle for this, though :

Thank you, Maria, for posting it here. I am not that advanced yet !

Isn't it a marvelous picture ? Perhaps posed with the bird. But artistic and memorable.

Yes, isn't it great ?
I for one some reason like that entire architecture selected for the Chapel. The steps going up to the door look so appealing to me. Not the 70 below zero temperatures, though ! I'll let someone else go visit it on an Antarctic bird-watching cruise, or something like that.

Indeed, Barbara. Very un-invitingly cold.
