The Libri Carolini by Theodulf of Orleans is a controversial document, commissioned by the Emperor Charlemagne to supposedly refute the seventh ecumenical council. However the Carolingians had a very different understanding of the word 'adore' when it came to the veneration of images, which caused much confusion in the west and delayed the acceptance of the seventh ecumenical council in Latin Christendom:
