What is interesting is that the former municipal leader wanted to save it, as did by the sound of it, many locals. Surprising considering the fact that they are doublessly muslims.

Turkey is quickly becoming more strictly muslim. In Islam, it is forbidden to build or restore houses of worship apart from mosques. In the article it said the Church was used as a boat shed or for storage; perhaps that why the officials wanted it restored.
Isn't it true that there have been rumblings about the phanar being "purged" of The Ecumenical Patriarch et al. by the increasingly fanatical Erdogan? Not sure if that is a good or bad thing

Well, if it is to be believed, there is a longstanding tradition and belief that Russia will invade Turkey and occupy the greater part of it, and that Hagia Sophia will be restored as an Orthodox Church, and that a third of the Turks will be killed, a third will flee in to neighbouring islamic nations, and that a third will convert to Holy Orthodoxy.

It's hard to imagine... but wouldn't a mass conversion like that be awesome!
