Recommended reading for Traditional Orthodox Christians

Post by Maria »

I would like this thread to contain recommended books for Traditional Orthodox Christians, and that the moderators here will play an active part in editing or deleting inappropriate posts. Thanks.

Some Traditional Orthodox Christian prayer books:

  1. A Prayer Book for Orthodox Christians, Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Boston, MA, 2000.

  2. The Psalter According to the Seventy, Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Boston, MA, 2008.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Good start, Maria. I have many books, but I will post a few at a time.

  1. The Law of God - Archpriest Seraphim Slobodskoy (Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville N.Y.)
  2. The Lives of the Pillars of Orthodoxy - Holy Apostles Convent
  3. The Philokalia - All volumes

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (Ps. 50)

  1. Russia's Catacomb Saints by St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood
The title pretty much sums up the book. It's basically a compilation of the lives of many different catacomb saints of Russia. I'm pretty sure this one is out of print but if you can find a copy of it somewhere I would highly recommend it.

  2. The Struggle Against Ecumenism by the Holy Orthodox Church in North America
This is a history book from HOCNA about the TOC of Greece from 1924 to 1998. What makes this book great is that it's divided into two halves; the first half is the history of the TOC in Greece. The second half is the various historical documents connected with the history of the TOC in Greece, which includes St. Philaret's letters to the different Greek TOC synods, the infamous epistle from the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1920, and various other documents so that you don't have to go searching online to try to find and read them. The only thing I disliked about this book was at the end of the first half where it discussed why HOCNA is in the right and other Greek TOC synods are in the wrong. But besides that, this is a great book.

  3. Genuine Orthodox Church of Greece (GOC): A Brief History and Commentary by Fr. Stephen Fraser and published by Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Phoenix, AZ
I haven't finished reading this yet but this book gives a Matthewite perspective of the history of the TOC in Greece, which I thought would be interesting to read after reading HOCNAs The Struggle Against Ecumenism.

Troparion of St. Philaret of New York
Let us the faithful now come together to praise our father, protector and teacher the pillar of the Orthodox faith and firm defender of piety even the wondrous hierarch Philaret and let us glorify our Saviour Who has granted us his incorrupt relics as a manifest sign of his sanctity.

The Arena: An Offering to Contemporary Monasticism, by (Saint) Bishop Ignatius Brianchaninov

This is a perfect book for our times.
