Why Are So Many People Switching Churches?

Post by Justin Kissel »

It seems like there are a great number of people who are moving around at present, either into or away from ROCOR. Any ideas why? Is the flow going one way or the other significantly larger (ie. are there more people coming in or going out)? For those who are leaving, are they going to the left (e.g., JP, Serbs), far-left (GOA, OCA) or right (ROAC, GOC)? For those who are coming in, where are they mostly coming from, left, far-left, or right? I've heard of at least a half dozen Churches, priests, and/or monasteries switching in the past few months. I also know that many people I've talked to our thinking about issues that leave "moving" a possibility (though in some cases, like mine, not likely). Where is all this activity coming from? Satan, God, or man? And why? To what end?

Of the ones in my area who left ROCOR: 2 joined the Bulgarian church and 1 joined the ROCiE.

Physicsgirl,

I assume you mean the Bulgarians under the OCA (not the old calendarists)? That's unfortunate, about ROCiE :-|

Can you be more specific about the area?

I think part of it is that American society is transient. I forgot how many times the average American person moves in their lifetime, but it is a lot compared to other countries. Another thing, most Americans don't know what they think half the time so they are always on the fence.

My soul is lonely dark and afraid.

But it seems very recently that people are re-examining their positions and butting their foot down and taking a stand, often where they did not stand before. I am noticing it as a trend as well. It has an ominous feeling to it.
