Wkipedia: what is a Canon?

Post by Liudmilla »

The Greek-speaking Orthodox have collected canons and commentaries upon them in a work known as the Pedalion (Greek: Πηδάλιον, "The Rudder") so named because it is meant to "steer" the Church. The Orthodox Christian tradition in general treats its canons more as guidelines than as laws, the bishops adjusting them to cultural and other local circumstances. Some Orthodox canon scholars point out that, had the Ecumenical Councils (which deliberated in Greek) meant for the canons to be used as laws, they would have called them nomoi/νόμοι (laws) rather than kanones/κανόνες (standards), but almost all Orthodox conform to them. The dogmatic decisions of the Councils, though, are to be obeyed rather than to be treated as guidelines, since they are essential for the Church's unity.

Obviously the canons have not united the autocephelas bloc of Orthodox ethnic churches. The POPE was given the divine primacy by Christ through the agency of the "keys" (pursuant to Matt.16:18-19) for the purpose of uniting the churches. A visible Church requires a visible head. The apostolic see (Rome) is head of all the churches, according to all the fathers.

Orthodoxy will never be united because they are decapitated. And their pride won't allow them to obey anyone or anything ordained by God for unity. Greeks and Russians are nationalistic people. They care more for their ethnic nations more then the unity of the Church.

Evfimy:

It has become patently obvious that you are anti-Orthodox.

Perhaps it is time for you to go spend sometime with your "catholic brothers", maybe some time away from us will show you the Truth of Orthodoxy.

Personally I would appreciate it if you would cease to abuse your Orthodox brothers and sisters, with your nonsense.

Milla, who is probably old enough to be your grandmother.

Evfimy I know that you are no longer a member here but how 'bout you sent me a message so I can talk to you a little. I definitely do understand where you are coming from but I would also like to tell something of my experience of genuine Catholic nationalism and so-called "Catholicism in Action!" Ultimately we all make our own decisions and unlike many on the internet I am cool with that. I just enjoy discussing these issues and am curious about your experiences and viewpoint. To be honest I am always happy to have a friendly correspondence or chat about those taboo subjects like Religion and Politics.
Everybody please at least be thankful that in these terrible times Evfimy cares enough to have a researched view that he believes in even if his comments may bother you at times.
Love and Prayers as neither exist alone in this world
