This time last year Cyprus was in the throws of electing an Archbishop. In Cyprus the entire Orthodox clergy and laity have voting privileges for electing the Archbishop, the Presiding Hierarch of the Holy Synod. The traditional Athanasios Bishop of Limassol was the favorite candidate among monastics and laity. However Chrysostomos Bishop of Paphos who had more of a modern approach to ecclesial matters was elected instead. The last time I read up on this particular primate he was trying to "mediate" a meeting with Patriarch Alexy II and the Pope.
