Question about the Catacomb Church

Post by Sean »

In I.M. Andreiev's Russia's Catacomb Saints, translated into English by Fr. Seraphim Rose, there is an addendum which contains encyclicals written by a catacomb bishop, during the 1960's/70's Soviet Era, by the name of "Met. Theodosius."

Does anyone know who this figure was/is, and which Catacomb group in Russia represents his synod or has a number of his spiritual descendants?

Sean,

I recall reading somewhere that the ROCOR sent a hierarch to the USSR to consecrate a catacomb bishop in the 1970's. I also recall reading that a number of Russians contacted the ROCOR in an attempt to come under the omophorion of the ROCOR Synod after the collapse of the Soviet Union, but were treated quite cooly by then-Archbishop Laurus Skurla. This was subsequent to the publication of Russia's Catacomb Saints by St. Herman's Press in the 1980's.

Does anyone know of a good reference on the history of the Russian catacomb Churches during the past twenty years? I would like to read it.

At the end of the seventy some catacomb priests (when their bishop died, Catacomb Archbishop Antony Galinsky) were under ROCOR Met Philaret (among them the current ROAC Catacomb Archbishop Antony of Yaransk and Vyatka). At the beginning of the eighty ROCOR ordered Bishop Varnava secretly then he traveled to the USSR and he ordered in 1982 to Bishop to Lazar (zhurbenko) in secret, but only this ordination was only publishes in 1990, when Bishop Valentine (Rusantsov) was ordered in Brussels, so was born FROC The Free Russian Orthodox Church and this way ROCOR returned the Hierarchy to the Church in Russia (FROC was formed by Catacomb Parishes and MP Parishes who left and repented from their sergianism). FROC was re-named in 1998 as ROAC, when the Lavrites-Markites were already in contact with the MP and they wanted to destroy the True Church in Russia.
