8th Sunday After Pentecost 28 July/10 August

Post by 尼古拉前执事 »

Sun 10 Aug / 28 Jul Matins Jn 20:11-18; Liturgy 1 Cor 1:10-18, Philipp 2:5-19; Mt 14:14-22, Lk 10:38-42, 11:27-28.

From the Orthodox New Testament

Matins: John 20:11-18
But Mary was standing outside in front of the sepulcher weeping. Then as she was weeping, she stooped to look into the sepulcher, and beholdeth two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. And they say to her, "Woman, why weepest thou?" She saith to them, "Because they took away my Lord, and I know not where they laid Him." And having said these things, she turned herself back, and beholdeth Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith to her, "Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou?" She, supposing it is the gardener, saith to Him, "Sir, if Thou didst bear Him away, tell me where Thou didst lay Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus saith to her, "Mary." She turned herself and saith to Him, "Rabbouni," that is to say Teacher. Jesus saith to her, "Cease touching Me, for I have not yet ascended to My father; but go to My brethren and say to them. 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'" Mary Magdalene cometh, bringing back tidings to the disciples that she hath seen the Lord, and that He spoke these things to her.

Liturgy Epistle: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18 & Philippians 2:5-19
Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all be speaking the same thing, and that schisms may not be among you, but that ye be perfected together in the same mind and in the same sentiment. For it was declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of the house of Chloe, that there are strifes among you. Now this I say, that each of you saith, "I indeed am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Kephas," and "I of Christ." Hath the Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or in the name of Paul were ye baptized. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas. As for the rest, I know not if I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not forth to baptize, but to preaching the Gospel, not in the wisdom of speech, lest the Cross of Christ should be made empty. For the word, that of the Cross, on one hand, to those who are perishing is fooloshness, but on the other hand, to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.

For let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, Who, exisiting in the form of God, deemed it not a prize to be seized to be equal with God; but He enmptied Himself and took the form of a slave, and came to be in the likeness of men. And having been found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient even to death -- indeed, the death of of a cross. Wherefore God also exalted Him exceedingly, and freely gave to Him a name that is above every name, that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth; and every tongue should confess for itself that Jesus Christ is the Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Therefore, my beloved, even as ye always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much rather in mine absence, be working out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is the One Who energizeth in you both to will and to energize for the sake of His good pleasure. Be doing all things without murmurings and disputings, in order that ye might become blameless and unsullied, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and wayward generation, among whom ye shine as luminaries in the world, holding forth the word of life, for a boast to me in the day of Christ, that I ran not in vain, nor labored in vain. But if also I am being poured out as libation upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all; and ye also be rejoicing in the same manner and be rejoicing with me.

Liturgy Gospels: Matthew 14:14-22 & Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28
And Jesus, having gone out, saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion toward them, and He cured their sick. And evening having come to pass, His disciples came to Him, saying, "The place is desolate, and the time is already past; dismiss the crowds, in order that they might go away into the villages and buy food for themselves." But Jesus said to them, "They have no need to go away; give ye them to eat." But they say to Him, "We have nought here except five loaves and two fish." And He said, "Bring them here to Me." And He commanded the crowd to recline on the grass. And having taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to the heaven, and blessedand broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds. And all ate and were filled, and they took up of the fragments that which was over and above -- twelve baskets full. And they who ate were about five thousand men, apart from the women and children.
And straightway Jesus constrained His disciples to embark into the ship and to go before Him to the other side, until He should dismiss the crowds.

Now, it came to pass, as they went, that He entered into a certain village. And a certain woman, by name Martha, received Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat down beside the feet of Jesus, and was listening to His word. But Martha was distracted about much serving, and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, is it no concern to Thee that my sister left me to serve alone? Speak to her therefore that she should help me." And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things. "But there is need of one thing, and Mary chose the good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

And it came to pass, as He was speaking these things, a certain woman out of the crowd lifted up her voice and said to Him, "Blessed is the womb that bore Thee, and the breasts which thou didst suck." But He said, "Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it."

  1. Why'd Jesus tell Mary not to touch Him but told Thomas to?

  2. Don't stay in a church that schisms from truth to rebuild or save it but neither leave one unless it teaches falsely.

  3. Being near Christ's more important than earthly pursuits.

Could someone explain to me what passage we are discussing this week? I was under the impression that we were discussing 1 Gospel passage per week, but there seems to be 4 Gospel passages and 2 from the Epistle.

It seems we are posting the Sunday readings and we can discuss whichever ones. Often there is more than one Gospel reading for a Sunday Liturgy even.

Nicholas,
Why do you have the Gospel reading for Matins posted for Sunday as well? I thought we were only doing the Liturgy readings for Sunday?

I figured it could not hurt, since there has been very little discussion on these thus far.

Unfortunately, this is another week when I just couldn't find that much in the way of patristics :( Sorry, this is all I could locate:

Mt. 14:14-22

Saint John Chrysostom, Homily on: (Matt. 14:13-22)

The Latin Catholic Thomas Aquinas, Catena Aurea (Matt. 14)

Lk. 10:38-42

Clement of Alexandria, Who Is the Rich Man That Shall Be Saved?, 8-11

"The Lord did not praise Martha for being anxious about much serving... that is, the preperation of the meal. But on thing, that is, the purpose of the meal, should be to satisfy need. You are well aware, also, of what sort of food the Lord Jesus Himself placed before the five thousand (Matt. 16:9; Mk. 8:19). There was no need for delicacies and sumptuous appointments." - Saint Basil the Great, The Long Rules, Q.20 (ONT, p. 333)

"In her anxiety to be hospitable Martha was preparing a meal for the Lord and His disciples; yet Jesus said to her: 'Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things. But few things are needful or one. And Mary hath chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her.' (Lk. 10:41-42) Be then like Mary; prefer the food of the soul to that of the body. Leave it to your sisters to run to and fro and to seek how they may fitly welcome Christ. But do you, having once for all cast away the burden of the world, sit at the Lord's feet and say: 'I have found him whom my soul loveth; I will hold him, I will not let him go.' (Song 3:4) And He will answer: 'My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her.' (Song 6:9) Now the mother of whom this is said is the heavenly Jerusalem. (Gal. 4:26)" - Jerome, Letter 22,24

Lk. 11:27-28

cf Saint John Chrysostom, Homily 44 on Matthew
