St. Seraphim of Sarov Church (ROCOR) in Monterey

Post by Justin2 »

Does anyone go to this church? I'll be living in Monterey soon, and the only other church nearby is about half an hour away.

I'm afraid that I don't know anything about the Church...

This was just sort of a bump post...

Ha! Finally a question I can answer!

St. Seraphim's is actually in Seaside, near Monterey. I live in Seaside, and visit it now and then. (I am a member of the Greek Church in nearby Salinas.) St. Seraphim's is beautiful. I love it. Most of the congregation appears to be Russian language instructors who teach at the Defense Language Institute.

Fr. Seraphim Rose attended St. Seraphim's when he lived in the Monterey area.

God bless you and welcome to the Monterey area,
Xenia

Here's the low-down on Orthodox Churches within driving distance of Monterey:

  1. St. Seraphim's, which you know about.
  2. St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, in Salinas. This is about half an hour's drive. I belong to this parish.
  3. St. Lawrence Orthodox Church, up in the Santa Cruz Mts. Beautiful new building, takes about an hour to get there up a windy mountain road.
  4. Sts. Peter and Paul, on the same windy mountain road as St. Lawrence. It's Antiochian. I think Franky Schaeffer was connected with this parish at one time. Concilliar Press is right next door.
  5. The Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church. This is on Church Street in downtown Santa Cruz, about 45 minutes from Monterey.

Isn't this St Seraphim Church in Seaside the one where +Blessed Fr Seraphim Rose first encountered Orthodoxy? I recall reading this in Not of This World......

Holy Father Seraphim, pray for us sinners

Actually, I beleive Blessed Seraphim first encountered Orthdoxy in the Old Russian Cathedral in San Fransico. He did however have a connection with the St. Seraphim church. His parents moved close there and when he came to visit them, he attended church in that parish. I believe the first time he spoke to an Orthodox priest was in that church and thereafter became extremely fond of him and moved him swiftly towards baptism.

In Christ,

Nicholas
