A Pilgrimage of the Russian Church Abroad Visits the Orthodox Holy Sites of Paris

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus, a pilgrimage was made by members of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to the holy sites of Paris on the first days of Advent, November 27-30. This group consisted of the Rector of Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Los Angeles, Mitred Protopriest Alexander Lebedeff, Secretary of the Commission on talks with the Moscow Patriarchate; Protopriest Victor Potapov, Rector of St John the Baptist Cathedral and member of the Pre-Council Committee for the IV All-Diaspora Council; another member of the same Committee and Personal Secretary of the First Hierarch, Priest Serafim Gan, and others.

During their visit to Paris, the pilgrims visited Lesna Convent, Protection Monastery in Bussy, Three Hierarchs' and St Sergius Podvories [representative centers], St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Russian Cemetery at Ste-Genevieve-du-Bois.

At St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the pilgrims were greeted by His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel, Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe, and prayed at Divine Liturgy. During a meeting with the Exarch and His Eminence's aides, Protopriest Alexei Struve and M Sollogub, the pilgrims' itinerary and other church matters were discussed.

At Lesna Convent, whose founding was blessed by St John of Kronstadt and St Ambrose of Optina, the pilgrims venerated the miracle-working Lesna Icon of the Mother of God and the relics of Holy Martyr Athanasius, Hegumen of Brest, and those of other saints. Abbess Makrina and the local clergy warmly greeted the pilgrims and asked questions relating to the discussions between the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the Moscow Patriarchate and the upcoming All-Diaspora Council.

At Protection Convent in Bussy, headed by Abbess Olga, the pilgrims prayed at the tomb containing the uncorrupt relics of recently-glorified St Aleksei of Yuzhinsk, who is particularly venerated by Russian Orthodox Christians in Western Europe, and viewed the Convent cathedral, the old Protection Church, the Chapel of St Seraphim of Sarov and the new refectory. The nuns asked that the pilgrims relay their regards to His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus and the monks of Holy Trinity Monastery and ask their holy prayers. The two monastic communities had jointly published Zhitiya russkikh svyatykh (The Lives of Russian Saints), by Nun Taisia, in the 1980's.

At Three Hierarchs Podvorie, whose church is painted by the great icon-painter Monk Gregory Krug, the pilgrims prayed during Divine Liturgy on the feast day of St Paisius Velichkovsky; and at the Russian Cemetery at Ste-Genevieve-du-Bois, they visited the graves of clergymen and noted figures of the Russian diaspora.

At St Sergius Podvorie, Protopresbyter Boris Bobrinsky told the pilgrims of the holy icons and relics of the church and of the history and current life of the Podvorie and its Theological Institute.

A Pilgrimage of the Russian Church Abroad Visits the Holy Sites of Old Constantinople

A group of pilgrims from the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia left Paris (see previous report) for a trip to visit the old city of Constantinople. Here they visited the Church of Holy Great Martyr Irene, where the II Ecumenical Council was held; the great Hagia Sofia Cathedral, built by Emperor Justinian; the Monastery of St John the Baptist of Studius; the Convent of the Life-Giving Spring at the Zoodochos Pege, where the pilgrims sensed the salvific grace of the Most-Blessed Virgin; the Church of the Panagia of Blachernae, where the first Akathist to the Mother of God was read and where She revealed Her veil to St Andrew, fool-for-Christ; the cave of St Demetrius of Salonika, the podvoriya [representative offices] of the Monasteries of St Panteleimon, St Andrew and St Elias of Mt Athos; and the Patriarchal Cathedral of Holy Martyr George the Victorious in Phanar, where the pilgrims were received by His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I. The Patriarch blessed them to venerate the holy sites of Constantinople and the Holy Mountain.

At the Church of St George, the pilgrims venerated a piece of the whipping-post used during the trial of our Savior, the holy relics of Great Martyr Euthemius the All-Praised, which abide in an ancient Russian crypt built with the blessing of Metropolitan Anthony (Vadkovsky, +1912); the relics of Empress Theophania, Martyr of Salomonius, mother of the Martyrs of Maccabee; and the relics of St John Chrysostom and St Gregory the Theologian. During their discussion with the Patriarch, which was held in a warm, gregarious atmosphere, the participants touched upon various church matters. In particular, the Patriarch recalled Metropolitans Anastassy, Philaret and Vitaly, the late Archimandrite Amvrosy (Pogodin), and inquired about the health of His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus and the archpastors and pastors of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia whom His All-Holiness knew personally. Attending the meeting were the members of the Synod of the Constantinople Patriarchate, Their Eminences Metropolitan Meliton and Metropolitan Emmanuel, and the Secretary of their Synod, Archimandrite Elpidiphoros.

At the podvorie of St Panteleimon Monastery, where the miracle-working copy of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is kept, the pilgrims were warmly greeted by the Rector, Hieromonk Timothy, who told them about the history and current situation of the Russian Orthodox Christians seeking salvation here. The pilgrims' itinerary throughout Constantinople included not only visits to holy sites but also meetings with Russian Orthodox residents in this ancient city.

Recognizing Lifting Of Anathemas?

Post by Kollyvas »

Bless Father.

It seems they were received by +batholomeios and given a blessing to tour the city, patriarchate and holy sites and to visit Mt. Athos. I guess St. Elias Skete is lost and forgotten, not to mention the Sorrowful Epistles...Will they be recognizing the lifting of anathemas next?! How can anyone not recognize THIS FR KOMAROVSKY SELLOUT?!

As a Russian Orthodox Traditionalist and loyal son of the MP, I want to say that I denounce such naked politikanstvo and see it as a betrayal of Orthodoxy not in accord with the traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church. Such ignoble betrayal is shameful. I reject everything this Synodeia is doing in the once hallowed name of ROCOR. This unscrupulous body and/or its actions in no way speak for the MP or its sober Traditionalist trends.

Rostislav:

I am genuinely curious..... If you are now a member of SCOBA, why do you care what ROCOR does? for that matter what the MP does? You have already condemned ROCOR to hell, so why waste your time and effort on what you clearly consider as doomed and heretical anyway? You do keep reiterating that one is not to consort with heretics.

Just curious mind you....

Cavorting with heretics...

Post by Kollyvas »

Firstly, I refer you to the thread, "I Believe In One Holy Catholic And Apostolic Church" to get a better assessment of my thoughts on heresy & councils, etc. Secondly, I have never condemned ROCOR as heretics, but question the unscrupulous and deleterious politikanstvo going on by which these BUNGLERS are setting back the cause of Orthodox Traditionalists. Thirdly, part of my formation was in ROCOR and the legacy of Blessed +Metropolitan Philaret is precious to me, and it's a sorry thing that cynics and politicians and DILLETANTES have it on the auction block at pennies on the dollar. Fourthly, I am a SCOBAn without apologies and a faithful son of the MP. Lastly, I am an Orthodox Traditionalist who believes in a common cause of ALL Traditionalists, resisters and non...So when a former Centre of Traditionalism SELLS OUT--ESPECIALLY AS STUPIDLY AND UNDEFTLY AS THIS ONE HAS--it sets us all back and hands the day to dark forces assaulting the Church.

ROCOR and the Eulogian group of Paris

Post by Jean-Serge »

When we read that Saint Philaret of New York regarded the Eulogian group of Paris, the Rue Daru, as a graceless schismatic group, and when we see this visit to "Bishop" Gabriel of Comane in Paris, we can really conclude ROCOR is abandonning all its traditionnal positions... I fear in some years we shall see ROCOR clergy at ecumenical gatherings...

For Saint Philaret opinion about the Daru street, read :

I home May 2006 will lead to a rebellion of the flock...
