Radical Leftists Seize Russian Parliament Building
By Adam Klesczewski The Moscow News
A group of activists of the radical National Bolshevik Party (NBP) seized the waiting room of the Russian State Duma in central Moscow Tuesday. Upon entering the building, the NBP members addressed the deputies with a statement accusing Russian president Vladimir Putin of "ten crimes against Russia and its citizens." Roman Popkov, head of the Moscow branch of the National Bolshevik Party told Ekho Moskvy radio that, despite the presence of FSB agents at the Duma entrance, around 20 NBP members managed to freely enter the building and address the deputies.
Several protesters were arrested but the rest continued delivering their statement.
As of printing time, large forces of the Interior Ministry and the FSB were reported to be gathering around the Duma building.
The crimes that National Bolsheviks attributed to the president include falsifying presidential and Duma elections; depriving the citizens of their electoral rights by directly appointing regional governors; replacing Soviet-era benefits with cash payments; passing Russian territories to China; mass murder of children and adults during the Dubrovka theatre siege and in Beslan; resuming political repressions, organizing extrajudicial reprisals against opposition figures; buying a personal yacht for $50 million, and creating an authoritarian criminal regime.
The NBP numbers about 17,500 activists with an average age of 20. They are best known for their colorful antics - throwing tomatoes, mayonnaise, eggs and carnations at politicians - to protest against President Vladimir Putin's policies on social benefits, housing and electoral reform.
The party was founded in 1994. It was first regarded as a countercultural oddity with neo-fascist and nationalist ideas. Now, its leader, writer Eduard Limonov calls his group a "classical left-wing party."
Limonov was detained in 2001 on charges of planning terrorist acts, establishing armed units and illegal storage of arms. He was released after spending 30 months in prison.
