THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE HAS APPROVED THE BEGINNING OF RESTORATION OF MONASTERIES IN THE SERBIAN TERRITORY OF KOSOVO

Strasbourg, September, 23, 2005.

The Council of Europe welcomed the agreement achieved on September, 20 during the last Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, concerning the first-order beginning of a reconstruction of Orthodox Monasteries in Serbian territory of Kosovo, victims of 2004, "Interfax-religion" informs.

Establishments which will be engaged in restoration are chosen by the special commission on the restoration, founded by the Council of Europe, the European commission and Mission of the United Nations Organization in Kosovo in May of this year.

Originally repair works will be carried out in 34 Orthodox churches and monasteries. Totally for the last years after leaving from Kosovo of the Serbian armed forces, there about 400 Orthodox buildings suffered.

In anniversary actions on Kulikovo field the ambassador of Serbia and Montenegro in Russia Milan Rochen has taken part. In conversation with journalists he has declared, that process of restoration of orthodox relics in Kosovo was not set going yet.

Thus, by M. Rochen's words, Serbs of Kosovo know that in struggle for a normal life they meet understanding of Russia.

"Unfortunately, today the situation in Kosovo is far from normal. They burn the Orthodox relics, kill the Serbian teenagers, children only that they of other belief and a nationality", — M. Rochen has told.

Speaking about battle on Kulikovo field, he has named it as a token of friendship and affinity between Serbians and Russians. "Kulikovo fight is not only famous page in the Russian history, it is also famous date for all Slavic peoples which during centuries inspired them on struggle for freedom and independence", — the ambassador has noted.

He has also reminded, that in nine years after Kulikovo battles there was a historical fight on Kosovo field, "though it was not so safe for Serbs, as (Kulikovo field) for Russian brothers".

"But Serbs of Kosovo know that in struggle for a normal life of the centers they meet understanding of close Russia. And I am sure that The Great Russia with the famous history is in their hearts", — M. Rochen has told.
