Question about media

Post by Marie »

I was fascinated reading the "We should all become peasants" thread, and became curious as to what y'all do with regards to the media. Do you have a television? What about radio, newspapers, music, books you choose, etc.?

I don't have a television. I was already well on my way of weaning myself from the evil box several years before I became Orthodox. I had already weeded out much of my CD collection before my priest said he doesn't approve of secular music besides classical (or maybe it was only modern music? can't remember! :? ). Listen to AM radio a lot. Since I found Ancient Faith Radio, I listen to that lots. I'm learning how to chant, so surrounding myself with Orthodox music is a very good thing, aside from profiting from it spiritually. Don't get the paper as I never took the time to read it. I used to read all sorts of trash, but I found I liked older books better, so aside from Orthodox books, I read lots of the classics.

And I'd like your input on a question:

In my office, radios/music are allowed. I tried chant CDs - very low and I can't hear them, any louder and coworkers complain (now mind you, they play all sorts of rap and hip hop!). I listen to AM radio without any trouble (although only one station comes in due to interference from computers - a relatively conservative station, they have Rush who is good for entertainment!). I've also tried NPR. I appreciate the news coverage on NPR, as well as the lack of commercials, some of which are just appalling! However, sometimes the left-slant makes my teeth itch!

Working in silence isn't an option for me, as the radio helps distract me from the very unedifying conversations of my coworkers!

Thanks,
Marie

I have the same difficulties at work a guy plays Howard Stern in the morning and then the Savage show in the afternoon on A.M. station, because he doesnt like the Music stations...well he is better off listening to music than these two anit-christian guys(STERN and Savage)
all they due is try and stir up confusion, anger, prejudice, and frieght..and sad thing about it is that these are probally the most listened to people in america..............sad very sad....I take it as God teaching me patience and restraint from worldly idle talk...the Jesus Prayer, a Precious and very Lethal weapon that will end all sin at its root..

Well, at least Rush is a social conservtive and a Christian even though he IS a Protestant! The bad thing about the one AM station that comes in are the commercials - lots of ads for cures for male sexual disfunction! :ohvey:

At least on NPR, the stories/interviews are generally interesting, even if I don't agree on the slant (I know folks who object to NPR's coverage of JPII's death, thinking NPR has become more "religious" :ohvey: ). I've always made a point of keeping up with current events, and I get more of that from NPR - and NO commercials. I don't know about you, but I don't like hearing "sparkly" commercials about "Christmas" sales during the Nativity Fast!

What I do.

I have an Apple iPod mini and it is loaded up with Liturgical music, prayers and the like as well as some Podcasts.

Some of my favorite educational Podcasts are Russian Talks, Colonial Williamsburg Podcasts, 12 Byzantine Rulers, and A Spoonful of Russian.

With an iPod and iTunes, you can easily listen to your own music and ignore the noise of others' radios. I have replaced my earbuds with some Sony over-the-ear headphones for comfort however.

Deacon Nikolai, thank you for your suggestions. However, I do not have the available cash for an Ipod. I am on the phone constantly, as well as up and down to printer, fax, copier, and headphones get seriously in the way. I tried much earlier this year. I tried Ancient Faith Radio for a while (very low), but now management is severely cracking down on ANYONE who uses the internet for anything even slightly resembling personal use, even at lunchtime. :ohvey:

NPR has been working fine, but now I'm having reception problems. It seems I just can't win! I'm back to the AM station.
