I agree that there are toll houses. Also the thought that at death, that is it, we are going to Heaven of Hell by what has happened in our life. But I see that there is a chance that we may be tormented after death until the final judgment by our conscience but end up in Heaven rather than Hell. This gives hope for my non Orthodox friends that have died and that I pray for.
Well I appreciate this book and recommend it to all that wonder what will happen after death or wonder what to do with all this out of body experiences and near death experiences. We should probably read it more than once.
See the contribution of Father Seraphim is great to Western America. It is sad that they accuse him, even after his repose. His works are known world wide, it is disappointing to know that these accusers of Father Seraphim haven't realized his gift to the Church. Many of his accusers haven't even read his book either. Great Spiritual book and reawakens the reader to realize the frightening mystery of death.
For me Fr Seraphim Rose books were important for my conversion from catholicism to orthodoxy. I heard orthodox post sovjetic russians in MP say that Seraphim Rose saved their spiritual life...his books were translated and secretly distributed in Russia. So when Communism fell, he were already widely known.
ABout tollhouses it is something that the soul must go through before the state of death...in which we await the Final Resurection.
My problem is with time...since I imagined life after death to be timeless...and then we will immidiately wxperience the general resurection and not experience any tollhouses.
Any comments on this?
Exact science must presently fall upon its own keen sword...from Skepsis there is a path to "second religiousness," which is the sequel and not the preface of the Culture.

Well, Patristicly speaking from what I know, regardless toll-houses or not, one undergoes the temporal judgement and gets a taste of where he is going. Now, in that duration, from death to the temporary judgement according to our mortal living, takes a some of time to make it there.
