covering of head at home prayer

Post by Tessa »

I would rather this thread NOT degenerate into a debate over women choosing to cover their heads or not.

For those of us that choose to do so, do you cover at home prayer or only public? I have to say at home I do maybe 50% of the time-usually at my icon corner.

Otherwise if I am just "conversing" with God, like before I go to bed when I am already lying down-I don't.

I definitely feel more "prayerful" when I do though.

In Christ,

All I can say is that the woman in our church cover their heads (generally) whenever they set aside time to pray...such as with morning prayers.

Tessa,

This is interesting because I was recently thinking about this as well. I do not cover my head at home-never have seen it done by anyone else that way either, but that doesn't mean it is correct. Come to think of it, I am going to ask my mom about how her grandmother did it when she was little (after all, they all lived together in the same house in the 50's-talk about your larger, non-nuclear families  ).

My wife had come to the conclusion, before we conveted, to wear a head covering all the time. This is because women are supose to pray with their head covered and we are suppose to be in prayer constantly. This is up to each person's conviction.

Reader Benjamin,

I don't see how that could be wrong, so bravo for your wife!

Well, I think I made my comment about this subject in previous posts....but I thank everyone in advance for their patience here.

I cover my head when I pray at home. That's what I was taught to do. I can't do it otherwise. Plus, I can smell the incense, from church, in my kerchief. It smells so sweet. This may sound silly, and no comments need to be made in response, but when I smell the incense, I feel like I brought home a part of church. I know. I know. It sounds completely silly saying it. But, it's not the same smell when I incense my house.

No not really Joanna. Actually it is quite normal for a person to feel at church when you smell incense. Even if the smell comes from your scarf! Actually, my prayer rope smells like myrhh and incense (due to all the altarserving, and holding the boll of the Holy Water for the Priest, and Spices (Meaning, colones for Holy Friday for the Epitaphios to be put on!)

So you're not the only one,

and also Orthodox Greek Cypriots (and most Islanders of the Aegean Islands) cense their house twice a day! Some interesting tradition of having the church at home!
