I'm curious as to when the All-Night Vigil of Russian practice developed, combining Great Vespers and Matins? And why?
Thanks,
Theodora Elizabeth

The Vigil service was common to Greeks and Russians. The Greeks officially stopped doing it in parishes in 1888, although de facto it had stopped a lot earlier.

Hi Romiosini,
Thanks for the input. I was referring mostly to parish life but not monasteries, where I believe as you say all night vigils are still regularly held. Do you know of any parishes in your homeland that still do regularly scheduled all night vigils?
