The Orthodox Church by Ware

Post by Theodora Elizabeth »

I recently read the review of Ware's The Orthodox Church on orthodoxinfo.net (in which the original 1963 or 1964 editions are recommended). Anyway, as a result, I went on-line in search of my own copy and found several copies of the 1963 or 1964 editions at www.alibris.com. I think I paid around $7 with shipping.

I only mention this because when browsing the St. John of Kronstadt Press website earlier this week, I saw they were offering the 1963 or 1964 editions, when available (they were obtaining used ones as they came across them) - for $25.

Big price difference, so I thought I would mention it. Yes, it is better to support an Orthodox source, but I for one didn't want to spend that much.

$7 with shipping is very inexpensive! The cheapest I ever found a copy was $6 plus $5 shipping. I have found shipping as low as $4 but the book always cost more in those cases. Most of the copies available seem to be in England, and shipping can cost more than the book. $25 is not unreasonable for a special service like this. I saw one in a parish bookstore for only $22. It had the used book sales invoice attached and there was no price-gouging going on (it was picked up by the priest and donated to the book-store), but it was very clear from the mark-up that the sale was going to help support the parish. How can you fault that? Yes it is cheaper to look around and buy it at the lowest price you can find out there - as long as your conscience doesn't convict you. Titheing 10% on income, and sending the money you saved on that book to St John of Kronstadt Press or another worthy labourer in the field helps sooth that little voice. Price ain't everything! Better for SJKP to do the work of finding your book while you do the work of saving your soul, whether you "want to spend that much" or not.

p.s. Is your saint Theodora or Elizabeth?

Nick ~

My patrons are Theodora (Empress who restored the icons) AND Elizabeth (The Grand Duchess)!

This requires a bit of explanation. First of all, I have always HATED my birth names, both of which are saints' names (I was raised under Rome), but my first name is the masculine of an archangel. I wanted a female saint's name that just wasn't a version of a masculine name. I actually wanted a woman saint by the same name. I did some reading and came across the Empress Theodora. I've always loved the meaning of the name("gift of God"), and so chose that. Then my priest loaned me the Lubov Millar book on Grand Duchess Elizabeth. I already was interested in the Romanovs from my love of history. I was instantly attracted to St. Elizabeth. Didn't feel it was right to abandon St. Theodora either. :) So I asked my priest, and he easily agreed to TWO patron saints (he's done it before).

What I realized later on, is that I had reversed the Grand Duchess' name, unintentionally! Since Louis, her father's name, has no equivalent in Russian, both the Grand Duchess and her sister the Tsarina, were given "Feodorovna" (Russian version of Theodora) as their patronymic. I would love to name a daughter Elizabeth Theodora.

I grew up under the church of Rome. I don't like applying the word "Catholic" to Rome, so I will often refer to the Roman Catholic church as "Rome" or the "Romans."
