The Olympics

Post by RaphaCam »

A friend of mine said the Orthodox Church opposed to the restoration of the Olympic Games by Coubertin in the late XIX century. I didn't find anything about it, have you heard something similar?

On a similar note: what is your opinion on the Olympic Games, not from an socio-economical, but from a religious point of view? I see why one would oppose fiercely to them, given all secularised Pagan symbolism.

I am not sure about the Orthodox Church's point of view. Maybe someone else will know the history.

But as far as they go, they seem like a scam to drain off everybody's energy !
I was indignant when my email system intruded a box into my email account giving a tally of the medals won by the top 5 or so nations !! I hated that so much that I put an icon over it to block it out of my view.

Surely there is so much ego involved. The fierce competition to host them. Then the winner has to fork over zillions to build all the facilities which may never be used fully again. Isn't that appealing only to national vanity ? Then ruining the economy of the country for perhaps many years to come ?

I won't have anything to do with them. I wouldn't watch even a headline, let alone an event on TV [ of course I wouldn't watch TV anyway ]. I feel it's yet another way which contrives to make people waste their precious time on earth. All the while LOOKING so wholesome - comparatively.

Good topic to bring up.
