I was sent an email from a concerned Orthodox Christian who lives on the Western Coast of the USA, so I have responded here:

Even if your home is structurally sound and could withstand a 9.2 earthquake, it is the LOCATION that is even more important. The article in the New Yorker is a great wake up call, and several authorities said that it was very well written.

If anyone lives in coastal communities such as Seattle, Portland, Eugene, or San Francisco and their home is west of the I-5, it might be best to relocate because the prediction is dire according to the New Yorker magazine and a FEMA response to it.

If a person lives west of the Interstate 5, look at the map. How far away is the ocean? Are tsunami warning zones posted nearby? If so, how long would it take to get in the car and head to a safe elevation?

Then consider, if a thousand or 100,000 people will be heading for the same major intersections and freeways at the same time, what is the chance of survival if a huge tsunami more than 100 feet tall is heading straight for the coastline within 15 minutes after that earthquake? If there are multiple aftershocks and tsunamis with waves after waves of cold salt water, the structural safety of a building would not matter, not if something big like a ship or truck were to plunge on top of it. Often there is a precursor to the big one, but that first shake could be a huge one that measures 6 or 7, which could cause lots of road rubble, road rage, and impassable roads. Of more concern would be the idiots with road rage on meth, statin, psychoactive drugs, or a combination of the above.

If a person lives in the foothills or at an elevation of at least 1000 feet, are there emergency stores of food and water? Remember that water, electricity and gas could all be disrupted. Fires could break out in the neighborhood due to non-functioning gas shut off valves or broken lines.

How far is the nearest dam, river, or reservoir? I knew some folks who moved from the California coastline to avoid the big one, but who moved into a new home downstream from a huge dam. They were killed in the massive and sudden flood that resulted when that dam broke, not from an earthquake, but from flooding rains like Texas has experienced recently.

Anyway, in some cases, it might be best to move to a safer location rather than trying to fix a structure that cannot possibly withstand a tsunami, fire, or flood. However, in other cases, if one were to move, there might be unseen dangers. For example, out here in the West, there are always fire dangers inland, where a person might have only 15 minutes to evacuate. The recent San Bernardino foothills fire on July 17, 2015, destroyed 20 cars as the fire crossed the freeway. That was many miles inland.

In the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, what killed more people than the initial earthquakes were the fires. People could not evacuate in time.

If a person is at a safer elevation, then consider the food supply. How would a local food store restock in a disaster with roads destroyed or weakened? What about city water? How much do should one have in reserve just in case the city water is disrupted by ground leaks, pipe breakages, and sinkholes? What about electricity and gas? A propane gas camping stove with spare tanks is a good idea.

Most cities have an emergency preparedness guide, but again, if a person lives west of the I-15, that guide might not help.

More than worrying about earthquake preparedness, are we right with God?

If we were to die within the next five seconds, would we have the name of Jesus or the Most Holy Theotokos on our lips and in our heart? Have we repented of our sins and received Holy Confession frequently?

A further response:

Plan ahead. Have a pre-packaged suitcase and food survival box that you can grab and run out the door. Include food, water, clothing, bedding, etc. Put your medicines all in a box together that you can grab.

Be aware that if you do take any foodstuff, etc., thieves will most likely try to rob you. Sometimes natural disasters bring out the worse in men, sometimes they do not. However, ISIS is stopping people when they flee, and they take everything from them except the clothes on their backs. People are getting worse ... I fear ... all signs of the End Times.

The problem with the area west of the Interstate 5 is fivefold:
(1) LIQUIFACTION - the area tends to be sandy, so it will shake more. This will result in more property damage. Northridge 1994 was damaged more by liquifaction which resulted in many deaths as apartment buildings collapsed like pancakes one layer upon another.
(2) TSUNAMI - the area west of the I-5 is at a lower elevation, and unfortunately, the freeway is usually constructed below the elevation of the surrounding homes to reduce noise and carbon monoxide poisoning to the surrounding neighborhoods. If you must go lower in elevation to reach the freeway, don't. Instead, plan your own route going to a higher elevation by taking local roads if available. Here a motorcycle might be advantageous. At elevations below 300 feet, a 100 foot tsunami pushed by the waves might reach you due to the sheer force and speed of the tidal wave depending on how many miles you are from the ocean.
(3) DAMS BREAKING - flooding from dams will be just as dangerous as the tsunami as the flood waters will wipe out bridges and roads that you might use to escape from the tsunami. Flood waters raging downstream colliding with the tsunamis racing upstream will churn the waters resulting in a frightful furious frenzy.
(4) FIRES most likely will cause the highest death rate as they did in San Francisco in 1906. With gas bubbling from the ground from ruptured gas lines and oil leaks, the contaminated water will catch on fire.
(5) DISEASE will be the final blow as medical aid can not come fast enough. Decaying corpses of humans and animals will spread more disease. Sewage leaking in the contaminated water will cause typhus and other water borne diseases.

Finally, the infrastructure will collapse. Food, fresh water, shelter, clean and dry clothing, and dry bedding will not be available in adequate quantities. Anarchy will ensue as the authorities will be stretched thin.

Pray that this does not happen in our lifetime.

p.s. We had to write a paper on this when I was in my senior year in health sciences. I graduated from Northridge in 2005 with my B.A. and then went on for my M.A. The campus was the epicenter of the Northridge earthquake in 1994. I used to walk by the monument almost every day on the way to the rebuilt parking structure. They had to rebuild almost the entire campus and the dorms.

I viewed some video tapes in which scientists now admit that they are able to trigger sizable earthquakes. The UN had a conference several years ago where they have studied this application of weather and earthquake modifications. Apparently, scientists have accidentally triggered massive earthquakes, and we know that fracking also generates quakes, so the scientific knowledge is already in place. And forces for evil most likely have already used this knowledge.

Yes, Maria, mankind has possessed the technology to perpetrate earthquakes since before you and I were even born. It is not something new or recent. I have been documenting their culpability in many of the significant earthquakes dating back more than half a century, including the 1994 Northridge quake in your backyard, which was exactly one year to the day before the Kobe quake in Japan, which was also on January 17. They were both deliberately perpetrated.

Their plot to perpetrate the California Northridge quake was hidden in the famous Steven Spielberg film E.T. (1982). It's also hidden in Spielberg's film Back to the Future (1985), which has scores of attacks hidden in it, and also foretells the presidency of Barack Obama. Back to the Future should be understood as "Barack to the Future".

The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan was at 14:46 JST on 3.11.2011.

Notice 14:46 Tōhoku totals 5:46 the time of the Kobe quake in 1995.
Notice 3.11.2011 is 1/17 Kobe totaled backwards. 1 / (10+2+1+1+3) = 17

They not only connected the two quakes (each killed many thousands) by date, but also by time.

They also deliberately connected Tōhoku to a deadly historical earthquake in Japan, the 7.9 M Great Kantō Earthquake on 9.01.1923, which reportedly killed as many as 142,800. This quake generated a tsunami as well.

The date of the Great Kantō Earthquake, 9.01.1923 totals 3.11.11 backwards, the date of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
3 / (9+2) = 11 and (1+1+0+9) = 11, gives 3.11.11.

The 3.11.2011 Tōhoku quake and tsunami was ritually shown in the film Battle: Los Angeles (2011). In fact, I could prove it in just the opening 5 minutes of the film.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita were also deliberately perpetrated. Hurricane Katrina 8.29.2005. Hurricane Rita a few weeks later on 9.21.2005. Notice Rita 9.21.2005 totals 8/29 Katrina backwards. (5+0+0+2+1) = 8 and you have 29 leftover. The letters that make up the name Rita are contained in Katrina. Notice there is an R, I, T, A in the middle of the word Katrina. I can cite scores of films where they hid these as well. I already mentioned My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) is about Hurricane Rita.

Every attack the Illuminati perpetrates is broadcast ahead of time, even several decades in advance in TV, film, and in other connected attacks and in sporting events, cultural events, and even the birthdays and movements of the Popes, Presidents and Princes.

Mary Poppins (1964) is all about their plans for hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This is why the witch Julie Andrews is sitting up in a cloud, a storm brews, and she floats down with an umbrella. This film is about multiple storms. Hurricane Katrina reached peak strength, Cat 5, on the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, hence the name MARY Poppins. Hurricane Rita made landfall on 9.21.2005, the feast of The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary.

Gone With the Wind (1939) is about their publishing their intentions to perpetrate Hurricane Katrina, hence the title Gone With the WIND.
