ROCA Holy Trinity parish is within Tsunami Warning area

Post by Maria »

ROCA's Holy Trinity parish in Oxnard, California lies very close to or within the Pacific Ocean Southern California tsunami evacuation area as it lies within one mile from the Pacific Ocean on flatland where a new fault line has been located that runs from Ventura to the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles toward Pasadena and then to San Bernardino. According to the LA Times, if the Santa Susanna and Sierra Madre faults were to release concurrently with this new Ventura fault, the energy released could generate a 7.1 or even 8.0 earthquake, which in turn could generate a tsunami.

Lord have mercy. Perhaps Christ will come before this scenario plays out.

Holy Trinity Parish is a must see if you are in the area. ROCOR-MP sued to take possession of this historical parish, but thankfully, did not prevail.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Absolutely thankfully so !

I have little idea of Southern California geography. I would have thought Oxnard was inland instead of a mile from the Pacific.
I am glad you brought up this possible danger, Maria. Let's pray nothing bad ever happens there and to that parish !
Who is the priest now, by the way ? Is it still Fr James Thornton or has he retired ?

Fr. James Thornton has retired and now serves the GOC-K parish in La Mesa (San Diego) under Bishop Auxentios.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

OK, now I understand what was said about the La Mesa parish in the GOCPortland site, the older version of the current "dep" under Bishop Auxentios.

I wondered how Fr James Thornton would be involved there ! Thanks for clearing that up.

Who is the Priest at Holy Trinity, Oxnard, then ? I hope there will be plenty of candidates for all the many TOC parishes to solve the clergy shortage.

This parish is on a rotational circuit of two or three priests who have been serving about every 3 to 4 weeks.
At other times, the parish has regular reader services on Saturday afternoons (Vespers) and Sunday mornings (Typica) with the Akathist Hymn occasionally served on Wednesdays

This is their schedule copied from their website when a priest is serving:

  • Saturday Evening Vespers and Matins: 4:30 PM

Sunday Liturgy: Hours and Confession at 9:30 AM

    Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM

For more details , please, see Service Schedule.

For Confession, please, come either after Vespers on Saturday evening or during Hours on Sunday morning

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

The above link displays a map. Notice how close the parish is to the Santa Clara River which appears to flow directly into the Pacific Ocean, but there is a sea wall with an estuary located nearby. With all the farms located in Oxnard and many farms using this river water, not much water would be left in the estuary.

During a tsunami, this river would overflow its banks and the lowlands lying adjacent to it.
Unfortunately, the parish is located in the lowlands, and the church is of concrete brick construction built before the stringent earthquake codes. Both the parish hall and the church are elevated with steps leading to the entrance. This helps during the rainy seasons, but the construction might not be able to withstand a sizable earthquake and tsunami.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Christ is risen!

Discussions regarding the risk of tsunamis should take into account the fact that man possesses the technology to deliberately perpetrate tsunamis, among other natural disasters.

'Tsunami bomb' tested off New Zealand coast
The United States and New Zealand conducted secret tests of a "tsunami bomb" designed to destroy coastal cities by using underwater blasts to trigger massive tidal waves.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... coast.html

The tests were carried out in waters around New Caledonia and Auckland during the Second World War and showed that the weapon was feasible and a series of 10 large offshore blasts could potentially create a 33-foot tsunami capable of inundating a small city.
