In Russia, there are communities where GOC priests serve in catacomb churches that exist in homes. People will have a small chapel in their homes and the priest will rotate his route to avoid suspicion. Where persecution is particularly bad, parishioners still gather in an isolated area of the forest to celebrate the Divine Liturgy.
In many cities here in the USA, home-churches are outlawed due to restrictive building codes (parking regulations) that prohibit weekly prayer meetings or bible studies in the homes, while allowing birthday parties and other such social activities. This is so hypocritical. Pasadena, California is among the most strict as one must have a parking permit to park on the streets, and in some areas, there is no public parking allowed on the streets, unless the vehicle is licensed and business-owned and providing a service to the residents, like a licensed plumber or contractor. When relatives visit, they must park in the driveway, often situated in alleys in the back of the residents.
