Unusual summer time fruits - dragon fruit, etc.

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Unusual summer time fruits - dragon fruit, etc.

Post by Maria »

I went to Whole Foods Market and noticed a fruit that I had not tasted before.

Even though it cost $10.00, I purchased this curious purple fruit that looked like it was from a cacti or a thistle plant.

Oh, what flavors. This dragon fruit was a delightful experience.

I may want to plant this cactus plant.

I never cared for dragon fruit. My wife likes it, but $10.00 for a single fruit is too much.
Ever try an atemoya ? cross between a sugar apple and a cherimoya.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atemoya Really delicious, sweet firm flesh, haven't seen many for sale the last few years though. Sugar apples yea, but atemoya's are much better. I've never tried a cherimoya. I saw some for sale many years ago in a Publix but they were 5 bucks apiece so I didn't get one. Wish i had tried one.
Mamey Sapote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pouteria_sapota is a good one to try too if you find them, rather expensive. Red, sweet flesh the texture of avocado. Most people use them to make milkshakes.
Also a white Sapote, different taste, very rare. Had one in the yard of a house I rented 30 years ago. House got sold and the dummies cut it down. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_sapote Another one to look for is a Black Sapote, tastes like chocolate, haven't ran across one in 30 years either http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diospyros_nigra
Sapodilla is another good one to look for. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manilkara_zapota

Thank you for that information.

I checked and there is a nursery not too far from us that specializes in tropical fruit which can grow in our area:

I don't think i have eaten ANY of these !
Inspiring to seek out.

So was the tree or the house cut down, Kostacc ?! I am asking for a very serious reason, not to make fun at all.

It was an old house that was falling apart. The people who bought it did a nice job of restoring it. Unfortunately they cut down the rare White Sapote tree in the yard, probably didn't know what it was.

Some of these trees attract aphids and ants. No doubt they did not want either.

Hmm, too bad. I feel sorry for the tree. I suspect that fruit trees enjoy producing fruit to help humans !
I always go out of my way to lavishly compliment my pear tree, while wheedling my near-defunct apricot tree to
snap back to life and produce crops like it used to, around St Vladimir's Day each summer.

I notice a lot of people indiscriminately cutting down trees with no reason at all, and thereby making people look at their houses directly without the nice screen of foliage blocking the view.
Particularly when the house is nothing to rave about, I wish the trees would be left where they grew, unless the species is difficult to handle. I was just hearing about Russian olives [which sound intriguing, like the Garden of Olives and the Russian convent there combined] as considered pests because of thorns. I have yet to see a Russian olive tree myself, so I can't say.
