The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, who holds a primacy of honor among Eastern Orthodox churches, said in a statement that he looks forward “with expectant joy” to his May meeting with Pope Francis.

“With expectant joy and an abiding sense of fraternity, we look forward, later this year in the Holy City of Jerusalem, to our commemorative encounter with our beloved brother in Christ, His Holiness Pope Francis,” said Patriarch Bartholomew I. “This 50th anniversary of the historic meeting between the late Pope Paul VI and our ever-memorable predecessor Patriarch Athenagoras is an exceptional opportunity to deepen the fraternal bonds between Peter and Andrew, for both our Sees owe their foundations to them.”

“For this reason, following in the footsteps of Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras, we express our desire to further the relations between the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Churches,” he added. “Two thousand years ago, it was in Jerusalem where the Light dawned from the Tomb. May it be in Jerusalem again where the light of peace, mutual trust, and brotherly love shines brightly, for the sake of our two Churches and the sake of the whole world.”

It seems like there will be a lot of other ecumenical services to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Anathema Lifting by the EP and the Pope back in 1964:

Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic Faithful to Celebrate Ecumenical Service on April 8, 2014 in Belmont, CA

His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco and His Excellency Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco will join together in prayer for the service of Salutations to the Holy Cross of our Lord on Tuesday, April 8 in Belmont, California. This year’s gathering commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the historic meeting between Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras and Pope Paul VI and is dedicated to the upcoming meeting between His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and His Holiness Pope Francis in May 2014.

This local tradition began in 2007 after the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross in Belmont received a relic of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. The faithful of the Holy Cross Church, along with the neighboring parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church have gathered in prayer annually each year to venerate this blessed relic, calling to mind the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our salvation.

All faithful are invited to participate in this service which will take place on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross, 900 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont, California. A reception and discussion will be held immediately following the Salutations service.

For more information, please contact Holy Cross Church at 650-591-4447. For those faithful not able to be in attendance or for those living outside the immediate area, you may also watch the service online at http://www.goholycross.org at 7 PM on Tuesday, April 8.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

‘We are called to be one’

By Valerie Schmalz

  • Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone is inviting Catholics to join him and Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Gerasimos at an April 8 Lenten prayer service commemorating the 50-year anniversary of the historic meeting of Patriarch Athenagoras and Pope Paul VI.

Archbishop Cordileone and Metropolitan Gerasimos will venerate a relic of the true cross possessed by the Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross in Belmont and pray for the upcoming meeting in Jerusalem of Greek Patriarch Bartholomew and Pope Francis May 25-26.

Pope Francis will meet Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, considered “first among equals” of the Orthodox bishops, May 25 in Jerusalem and again the following day. On May 25, the two are scheduled to sign a joint declaration. “We are called to be one, and the pope is coming to remind us of this and renew the spirit of unity and fraternal love,” Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal of Jerusalem said at a Jerusalem news conference May 27.
