Theophany in Greece - 2014

Post by Alexandros »

Theophany was celebrated all over Greece yesterday
(for those following the Old Calendar).

The celebration was especially magnificent in the Port of Pireaus in Athens.
Archbishop Kallinikos, along with Metropolitan of Pireaus Gerontios,
Metropolitan of Attica - Chrisostom, Metropolitan of Toronto Moses,
and Bishop Theodosios.

Hundreds of faithful along with a parade and the band of Pireaus,
went to the Port of Pireaus where the Cross is thrown in the water.
The brave faithful that dive in the cold water to catch the Cross.
This year it was around 50 people.

Dear Alexandros, Thank you!

In Russia it is modest. Here the First Hierarch of ROAC Metropolitan Theodore blesses water in one village near Suzdal:

And this is Resurrection of Cross in Suzdal by First Hierarch.

Theophania 2014 at Battery Park - NYC

The Clergy and people of the Cathedral of St Markella in New York City
celebrated the Great Feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River (Theophania) - 2014.
As has become tradition the celebration culminated at Battery Park in New York Harbor
with young men swimming in the Hudson River to retrieve the Cross.
This year the Cross was tossed into the harbor by His Grace Bishop Demetrios of Boston

Swimmers try to catch the cross which has been tossed into a body of water by the Bishop.

(Sorry, the image will not post, but you can click the link.)

The victorious swimmer holds high the Holy Cross:

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

This video demonstrates how we all get wet without going near the ocean.
I found this in a photo album from Seattle's St Nicholas Cathedral ROCA (aka ROCOR-A).
