Watch out, everybody for FAKE "technician" SCAMS

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Watch out, everybody for FAKE "technician" SCAMS

Post by Barbara »

When someone calls out of the blue claiming to be a Windows expert who has detected Error messages on
your computer and is willing to fix them for you - at a hefty price, of course - it is an international SCAM.
Started from India, according to this article, many shops are set up here in the US, Australia, UK, Europe, etc.
They know how to disappear immediately so they can not be traced by angry "customers" taken in by their
scare tactics.

Read the article here to gain all the specifics of the tricks they play.

Just be sure to never let anyone have Remote Access to your computer, unless, I would guess, it is from
an antivirus program provider that you have paid for legitimately.

I never heard a single word about the scam style detailed in the clearly-written warning article below.
But we all need to know. These people are not harmless cranks; they actually are so vindictive that once allowed
Remote Access by your own permission, and you don't agree to pay them the money they want, they will tear up your computer !
They sabotage files and your internet connection and may even totally destroy it. This shocking revenge was
detailed in another article on the same blog run by experts fighting mallware.

There was a very naive woman from the UK who subscribed to their services.

She was billed twice by this Indian operation on her credit card, and the company destroyed her computer by downloading viruses. She had to buy a new computer.

Hang up on anyone who calls you offering to fix your computer, whether Windows or Mac. Do not press "1" or any other number. If you did not originate the call, it will most likely be a scam.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Oh they have scams now for BOTH PC and Maxcs ?
Thank you, Maria. I thought it was only for Windows.

Yes, I was going to mention that ELDERLY people have been targeted and easily taken in often.
Only when younger members of the family warn them do they avert the disaster.
Sometimes the relative has to go to the bank and arrange for the payments to be stopped.
What a snarl !

So -- what is the danger specifically of their order to Dial 1, or any number ?

We have to protect ourselves and especially our elderly TOC people, because we do have quite a number
who do not keep current with such frightening deceptions.

If any readers are interested, here are 3 youtube videos made by a top expert explaining the dynamics
of these scams.
I haven't watched them, but some members may want to see if there is helpful information therein.
If convenient, please let the rest of us know if they are valuable.
