Bogo,

Of course that would mean a passionate kiss, not a kiss of friendship. There are people in our synod I know who have been excommunicated for 6 months and more.

Excommunicated for french kissing? how unpastoral. :ohvey:

Our culture is ruined and it produces some bad fruit in almost everyone. Trullo canon 102 says the prescriptions of canons must be applied as a medicine for healing. Cutting a teenager off from communion for six months for kissing is A REALLY BAD MOVE.

Actually I just thought of this. Do you mean excommunication in the real sense, as in EPISCOPAL AND PUBLIC or do you mean his/her spiritual father imposed this as a penance? The latter is acceptable in my book becuase a SF's decrees are by nature pastorally minded. If your bishop did it, especially publicly, I think that is unpastoral.

away,

Being excommunicated in the Orthodox Church dos not have the same meaning as in the Latin system. It simply means you cannot go to communion.

Anastasios,

I would hate to characterize it as a "penance", it was more for their own protection (therefore it was certainly pastoral). Receiving Holy Communion is very serious matter and being repentant sometimes also means going for a time without doing whatever you repented of. When Christ saved the prostitute from being stoned, He told her, "Go and sin no more".

NEWS:

The Times, London, 8 May, 2004

"Members of the United Methodist Church in America have voted to maintain its traditional teaching against homosexuality. Delegates at the Church's general conference in Pittsburgh voted 527-423 against a proposal that would have acknowledged officially that Methodists disagree on the compatibility of homosexual practice with Christian teaching."

While this appears to be a hopeful step, the closeness of the vote probably means this 'proposition' will come back another year, and another until the 'modernisers' get their way............

Sadly.
