Is there a standard way of placing icons, besides the obvious of Theotokos to the left and Christ on the right?
Someone told me that the icons of the Theotokos and Christ should be in a position above the saints.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (Ps. 50)
Michael Astley wrote:Moving outwards to the left from the centre Rood, there is Holy Wisdom with Faith, Hope, and Charity; then Our Lady the Healer; and then St Basil the Great. To the right of the Rood is the Transfiguration of Our Lord, and Christ of the Isles, in which He is encircled by Ss David, Andrew, Patrick and Eadmund. Beneath the Christ of the Isles icon is are the Last Supper and St Seraphim of Sarov, and in the centre is St Michael of the Bodiless Hosts. On the right wall are St Andrew the Apostle, St Benedict of Nursia, and the Mystical icon of the Church as the Ark of Salvation.
OH MY! NOT the Ark of Salvation icon! ANYTHING BUT THAT! LOL! This is gonna start whole messes of comments and yelling.
(Dons my battle armor and bulletproof vest)
Ok, I think I am ready...
Fire away...
Ok. Yeah. Soooo....I don't get it. What's the battle about?
I missed the last news letter.
(Searching the apartment for my armour....found it.)
Bring it on!!
Still don't get it... but my helmet is fastened. Waiting for an explanation.
How long do I have to keep this armour on...it's getting hot!

Well Joasia, you see,
the last time someone brought up the topic of the icon in question everyone got in their battle ships with their armor and their guns and random weapons of mass destruction and went to town on this icon calling in non-Orthodox and the like and so I assumed (hopefully wrongly) that since we now have a picture of a person that actually has that icon in their icon corner that the assaults are going to recommence. I hope not though cause as you said the armor and stuff gets really hot really quick!

There are no hard and fast rules. Generally you want to have Christ the right and the Theotokos to the left, or when vertical, Christ above the Theotokos. Some people make their icon corner look like an iconostasis, others will have Christ and the Theotokos on the first row, their patron saints on the next row and often an icon of an angel, the hospitality icon, and/or the cross at the top. Usually the minimum suggested is to have icon of Christ, of the Theotokos and your patron saint, although having one of your guardian angel or an archangel and the cross is always recommended as well.
I've been in Russian homes where the icon corner is in the livingroom or dining room. I find that very inviting. We are constantly reminded that Christ is in our presence. And when prayers are said before eating, everyone turns to the icon corner.

I've heard tales of people, as guests in others' homes, venerating the icons before greeting the host. Thta's trather lovely, although I'm not sure how that would work socially here and now.
