What I've heard from a ROCOR monastery is that he recanted of communism when becoming patriarch.

As in publically recanted his service to the Soviet State when he was being made "Patriarch" in 1991? If that had happened I dont think either ROAC or True ROCOR would exist and this Unia wouldve happened a long time ago without nearly as much fuss. Those Lavrites were telling lies- surprise, surprise...

George posted a picture he doctored to show our moderator, Father Siluan wearing a soviet hat with a hammer, sickle and star on it.

Which one? The docted photograph of Fr. Siluan wearing the hammer & sickle, or the docted phoptographs of MP heirarchy presiding over Masconic rites or the docted photograph of Patriarch Alexy above?
