Nicholas,

Will you be naming her or him based on the date that he or she is born, after a certain saint, or leaving it up to the priest? When my daughter was Baptized she read The Lives of the Holy Women Martyrs to find a saint she felt pulled toward and one that was near her birthday.

Dear Nicholas,

I really want to name the child after a saint that I really love and often pray to. I am thinking of several. My favorite saint who I love is St. Panteleimon. I really want to name the child Panteleimon if it is a boy. However, I am worried about how awful that name sounds to the engilsh ear and what cruel school children could do with it. Just think of it, ''Panty-hose-man'' ''Panty-Gayman'' ect... the options are endless (not like I was one of those cruel school children in my day since I can think of such good names :D ). Perhaps it would be a little cruel to do this to the child. I really wish St. Panteleimon had a different name. I don't know. Do you think my worries are too secular and that I shouldn't worry too much about it?

In Christ,

Nicholas

If people can give their kids names like, Conner, Tanner, Coleman, Bryson, Bryar, Brockton, Cody, Timberland, Lexus, Braydon, Mystic, Cooper, Trapper, Fisher, I wouldn't worry to much about Panteleimon. Though, I do understand your concern.

My wife and I are pregnant with our second child and I'm really gunning for Anastasy/Anastasia (given the calculated due date of March 28/April 10), which is another name (at least Anastasy) that isn't heard too much in the States.

Congrats!

As far as the name thing goes, I wouldn't worry about how "strange" the name sounds. My parents worried about the same thing (they didn't want my name to sound like someone who just stepped "off the boat") so I have an "American" name & my Russian name. Ugh-I cannot explain what a pain that has been throough the years!!!

Panteleimon would be a beautiful name! You just have to wonder, would people shorten it and just call him Pan?

Thank you Daniel and Natasha!!!

Congradulations on your second child Daniel! May the Lord bless your family.
Incidentally Daniel, I am thinking of naming the child Anastasia too if it is a girl. My wife is Japanese and strangely Anna is a quite popular Japanese name so as a nickname it would work in both cultures.

I actually am not worried about the oddity of the way a name sounds so much as I am the ease with which a name could be mocked. Actually I am all in favor of an off the beat name. I could never go for John, Micheal, ect. Some of the choices we have for a boy if not Panteleimon are Elisha, Isaac, Isaiah, Marcarius, Seraphim and Nectarios none of which are common. It is the fact that Pateleimon is so easy to make fun of. You guys couldn't have forgotten grade school could you (again, what do you think about ''Panty-Gayman''? I just thought of another one right now off the top of my head: ''Hey panty your lame man'' :P . See how easy it is. Give it a try and I am sure you will have quick results :( )

But saint Panteleimon is my favorite saint. Sigh :ohvey: ...what to do...what to do..

We will see,

In Christ,

Nicholas (Savva)
