An essay on the introduction of the major elevation of the host during in the Western liturgy during the twelfth century. The practice was introduced to combat Cathar denials of the real presence in the eucharist, but generated considerable controversy in the mainstream church with some theologians viewing the innovation as leading to idolatry and veneration of unconsecrated bread and wine:
