Agenda for a Future Pan-Orthodox Council

Post by haralampopoulosjc »

Some possible items on the agenda for a potential Pan-Orthodox Council:

  • Canonization of pre-schism Western Saints as well as saints around the time of the schism (Charlemagne, Leif Erikson, Brian Boru, Harold Godwinson, Wibert of Ravenna)

  • Canonization of certain Athonite elders from the period 1924-1965, who were commemorators

  • Canonization of controversial World Orthodox elders (Savvas the New of Kalymnos, Joseph the Cave-Dweller, Philotheos Zervakos, Arsenios the Cave-Dweller, Gabriel of Dionysiou)

  • Determining the validity of the Western Rite and it's liturgies (Use of Sarum, Gallican Rite, Mozarabic Rite, Roman RIte, Ambrosian Rite, etc.)

  • Definitive anathemas of past and current heresies (phyletism, imiaslavism, Sophianism, ecumenism, Sergiansim)

  • Condemning the Revised Calendar

  • Jurisdictional boundaries

Charlemagne? Leif Erikson? I'm baffled. It's been over 30 years since I studied Charlemagne, but I'm confident that he was no Orthodox saint. Why Charlemagne?

And why do you not list Cyprianism? Regardless of the current assessment that it never was a heresy, the fact remains that it was condemned as such by multiple synods, including the one that came into union with it. Without a clear repudiation of Cyprianism, any future Pan-Orthodox Council will be a failure.

Of course it could turn out during the deliberations of the council that Charlemagne was not a saint, but some Orthodox believe he was. It doesn't seem like he ever supported the filioque heresy and the Church of France was still Orthodox during the time of his reign.

Demonstrate where Cyprianism has ever been condemned as a heresy by any competent Greek Orthodox synod. The ROAC and RTOC condemnations overstepped their jurisdictional boundaries and are thus invalid. The 1986 condemnation was rescinded by the GOC-K, and the Lamians are a parasynagogue whose declarations do not have the power to bind and loose.

I am unaware of the GOC-K synodically rescinding the condemnation. Can you please direct me to where I can find it?

As far as the ROAC and RTOC condemnations being invalid, Cyprianism touched the whole Church and continues to do so. It is an assault on the unity of the Church. It needs to be dealt with by everyone in a serious manner.

I'm pretty sure it's stated in their clarification document from 2016 regarding the 2014 Confession of Faith.

One can hope for true unity in the Faith. Repentance is always at the foundation.

“Heal the schisms of the churches” as it says in our prayer books.

“The Russian Church Abroad is not the cream that has floated to the top of Orthodoxy after all these years. We’re hanging onto Orthodoxy by our fingernails.”
