Finding Works by Photios Kontoglou?

Post by Cornelius »

https://www.imoph.org/Theology_en/E3f2007aFotKon-1.pdf

I'm interested in learning as much as I can about Photios Kontoglou, his life, and his works. If I knew Greek, I bet I would've found out a lot more about him by now. All that I have read about Kontoglou is deeply inspiring to me, he sort of reminds me of Dostoyevsky. Aside from a few places to buy some physical works that only include parts by Kontoglou, and some excerpts online, there doesn't seem to be many direct sources in English.

Where should I start looking? Most of his work seems very obscure in the English-speaking internet. I was wondering if anyone here had any of his works, could point me in the right direction.

'It were indeed meet for us not at all to require the aid of the written Word, but to exhibit a life so pure, that the Grace of the Spirit should be instead of books to our souls, and that as these are inscribed with ink, even so should our hearts be with the Spirit. But, since we have utterly put away from us this Grace, come, let us at any rate embrace the second best course.'

I will try to attach 6 PDFs

OLD ANSWER
I would suggest using online academic library catalogs and ChatGPT, not just Google, to search. Go to https://hchc.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US ... lou&te=ILS, Harvard Hollis, WorldCat.org, Library of Congress, and the Union of Greek Academic Library Catalogs (the name has probably changed). Start with Harvard Hollis and remember that his first and last name are spelled in different ways: Photios/Photes Kontoglou/Kontoglous/Kontoglu. Constantine P. Cavarnos has written about Kontoglou. Kontoglou also wrote an essay within "Against False Union" by Kalomiros/Kalomoiros. Kontoglou was a new-calendarist who joined old-calendar Archbishop Auxentios towards the end of Kontoglou's life. Also search for "Alexandros Papadiamantes" (Alexander Papadiamantis) who is sometimes called the Greek Dostoevsky

Dearest brother,

I haven't seen you on the forum before, welcome! Good to have you!

I do not know much about Mr. Kontoglou myself either, but I do know that he wrote the foreword to Dr. Alexander Kalomiros' "Against False Union", and at least from the sounds of the letter Dr. Kalomiros wrote and from the foreword, it sounds like it was at Mr. Kontoglou's request that Dr. Kalomiros even wrote such a work.

I use the work in catechism and Fr. Seraphim (Rose) of Platina used to recommend that work to all Orthodox Christians -- inquirers, catechumens, baptized, secular, monastic, clergy -- which I would also recommend.

I attached a PDF of the copy of Against False Union that I have with Kontoglou's foreword in it.

post-scriptum: the spelling mistake in the PDF is how I received it.
