A place to share Orthodox documents and links to books that are inaccessible, out of print, et cetera.

It seems odd for a Russian Orthodox princess to draw a sanskrit symbol of luck. This is not meant to sound sarcastic, I am simply uncertain how else to describe it without beating around the bush. I also do not mean to sound disparaging of a martyr.

I thought good luck charms and the like were forbidden since they were associated with occult practices. I'm still a catechumen, so I apologize for my ignorance.

I honestly don’t have a clue. I assume it wasn’t viewed in that way. This BBC article seems to give some insight. My guess is that this was just a common symbol of good luck that wasn’t given much thought. Sort of like kids in the 90s drawing the “Cool S”. You can see from the article that It was an ancient symbol used in Kiev so it wasn’t directly associated with the Occult. What makes the most sense is that this is just what is called “Childlore” and you can read about that in the link from the “Cool S” page.

Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the Kingdom (Luke 12:32)
