The Lamentations of Narek

Post by SavaBeljovic »

I recently discovered a book called "the Lamentations of Narek" by a Gregory of Narek (he is considered a Saint by the Monophysites and Papists but I don't know if he was actually one of ours)

Link for Gregory of Narek: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_of_Narek

The book is fascinating, being a collection of prayers and poems, and is very popular in Armenia. It is apparently the second most printed book in Armenian behind the Bible and can apparently be found in almost any home in Armenia.

We have a physical copy at our Church here in Louisiana that belonged to our Hieroschemamonk Elia, but it is in bad shape. Despite being common in Armenia, English versions are rare. I could find a French translation online (https://archive.org/details/odesetlamentatio0000nare) but English copies are rare.

The most common English volume is this one: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1794711

If anyone has a PDF or knows where to find a copy, please send it my way. Otherwise I might try to transcribe our copy and release it as a PDF.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

Our dearest brother Simon found a copy online in both English and Armenian https://narek.zoraweb.com/

Fr. Elia insisted he was Orthodox and not a Monophysite, as the Orthodox Church still had Sees and Bishops in Armenia until the early 11th century, but I do not believe he is on any Calendar.
