Justin,

No I wasn't kidding. If someone wants to really know how all of these conveniences (ie. vices) have become a part of our lives, go live in your backyard for a few days like the birds do.

Joe,

Was that the History Channel? I thought it was originally a BBC production and aired here on some other network that eludes me....maybe I'm wrong...but that I don't think was the main point. I agree that the history channel has its liberal (i.e secularist) bias, but there is some good programming that can be informative. But Justin brings up a good point about do we wnat to support the entire entity at all, which is another big question mark.

what about going to the movies, going to a newsstand, reading a newspaper, going to a bookstore, going out in general society at all? We're not all monks. The objectionable stuff on TV is also in much of society at large as well.

I'm still going to watch the History Channel, the Food Network, & FoxNews. I've even learned to cook a few things for my wife :)

Then maybe society at large should be avoided, even if we aren't monks? :) That's what Saint Tikhon counselled centuries ago... imagine what he'd say now to us!

It all comes down to this

We've all got our excuses and we've all known what's the right thing to do too. Sometimes that's just hard. Such's the life in Christ.

I'd have no qualms about rejecting society at large to an extent. After all the monastic style of life really isn't just for monastics. But I also think it was Saint Basil the Great who said to be like bees taking just what is good from everything. So if we just take some of the good programming, good news media etc. then it might not be so bad.
