I am starting this thread with a commentary, which at some point will have the full readings and oNT commentaries added by Mary since there was a mix-up and the 14th Sunday after Pentecost was accidentally posted instead! :oops: Normally the full readings and then a commentaries post by Mary would have been first.

13th Sunday after Pentecost - The Stone Which the Builders Rejected


Matthew 21: 33-42

by Blessed Theophylact, Archbishop of Ochrid and Bulgaria


  1. Hear another parable: There was a certain man, a householder, who planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and dug a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it to husbandmen, and went into a far country. Yet another parable He brings to them, showing that though they were deemed worthy to receive an immeasurable degree of care for their condition, they did not get better. The man, a householder is the Lord Who in His love for man calls Himself a man. The vineyard is the Jewish people, planted by God in the land of promise. For He says, Bring them in and plant them in Thy holy mountain . [Ex. 15:17] The hedge is the law which prevented them from mixing with the Gentiles; or, it is the holy angels who guarded Israel. The wine-press is the altar; the tower, the temple. The husbandmen are the teachers of the people, the Pharisees and the scribes. The householder, God, went into a far country when He no longer spoke to them in a pillar of cloud. Or, the departure of God into a far country is His long-suffering; for when He is long-suffering and not in hot pursuit of wrongdoers, demanding an account, He appears to be asleep or absent on a far journey.


    34-39. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. The time of the fruit drew near during the years of the prophets. For the servants who were sent are the prophets who were abused in various ways by the husbandmen, that is, the false prophets and false teachers of those times. One they beat, as they did to Micah when Sedek struck him on the jaw [III Kings (I Kings) 22:24]; another they killed, as they did to Zechariah [the father of John the Forerunner] between the temple and the altar; another they stoned, as they did Zechariah, the son of Jodae the high priest [II Chron. 24:21]. Later the Son of God was sent and He appeared in the flesh. He said, They will reverence My Son , not unaware that they would kill Him, but signifying what ought to be. For, He says, they ought to honor the dignity of the Son even if they had killed the servants. But the husbandmen saw Him and said, This is the heir; come, let us kill Him . The Jews, too, said, "This is the Christ," and they crucified Him. They cast Him out of the vineyard, for the Lord was slain outside of the city. But since we would also say that the vineyard is the people, Christ was slain by the Pharisees, the evil husbandmen, outside the vineyard, that is, outside and apart from the will of the guileless people.


    40-41. When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? They say unto Him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. When He cometh . When? At the second coming? It seems to have this meaning, but a better meaning is this: the lord of the vineyard is God the Father Who sent His Son Who was slain by them. When He comes, that is, when He looks down on the lawlessness which the Jews committed, then He will miserably destroy them by sending the Roman army. And His vineyard, that is, His people, He will give to other husbandmen, that is, to apostles and teachers. Understand the vineyard to mean also the Divine Scriptures, in which the hedge is the letter, the wine-press that is dug is the depth of the Spirit, and the tower is theology, lofty and exalted. These Scriptures, then, were first possessed by bad husbandmen, the Pharisees; but God has let them out to us who cultivate them well. But they slew the Lord outside the vineyard, that is, outside those things of which Scripture spoke.


    42-44. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? [Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: and on whomsoever it shall fall, it will crush him to powder to be scattered.] The stone means Christ Himself; the builders are the teachers of the Jews who rejected Him as if He were useless, saying, "Thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon." But when He rose from the dead, He was set in place as the head of the corner, that is, He became the head of the Church, joining Jews and Gentiles in one faith. For as the stone which forms the corner of a building makes continuous the walls leading to and from it, so Christ has bound all together in one faith. This corner is marvelous, and is the Lord's doing. [See Ps.117:22-23] For the Church which connects us and makes us one in faith is the Lord's doing, and is worthy of all wonder, so well is it built. And in another sense is it marvelous, because the Word of Christ has been confirmed and substantiated by marvels, that is, miracles, so that the composition of the Church is marvelous. The kingdom of God, that is, closeness with God, has been taken from the Jews and given to those who believed. Those who stumble against the Rock of Christ and take offence at Him will not only be crushed at the second coming, but already here in this life they have been scattered like powder by Christ. They have been scattered over all the earth, as we now see the pitiable Jews to be. Understand that he who is crushed to powder to be scattered is dispersed abroad and scattered in diaspora.

Matins Gospel

Mk 16:1-8:
And the sabbath having passed, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the Mother of Iakovos, and Salome brought aromatic spices, that they might come and annoint Him. And very early in the morning on the first day of the week they came to the sepulcher, after the sun rose. And they were saying among themselves, "Who shall roll away the stone from the door of the sepulcher for us?" And they looked up and saw that the stone had been rolled away, for it was exceedingly great. And after they entered into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right, clothed in a white robe, and they were amazed. And he saith to them, "Cease being amazed. Ye are seeking Jesus the Nazarene Who hath been crucified. He was raised, He is not here. Behold the place where they laid Him. But go and say to His disciples, and to Peter, that He goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see Him, even as He told you." And they went out and fled from the sepulcher. And trembling and ecstasy held them fast, and to no one did they say anything, for they were afraid.

1 Cor 16:13-24
: Keep on watching, standing fast in the faith, conducting yourselves in a courageous way, and being strong. Let all your things be done in love. But, I beseech you, brethern--ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they set themselves to ministering to the saints--that ye also be submitting to such, and to everyone who is helping in the work and toiling. And I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas, adn of Fortunatos, and of Achaikos; for that which ye lacked, these supplied. For they refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore be acknowledging such ones as these. The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Priscilla greet you much in the Lord, with the church in their house. All the brethren greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. The greeting of me Paul with mine own hand. If anyone love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema. The Lord hath come. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

1Tim 2:1-6: I exhort therefore, first of all, that entreaties, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all those who are in authority, that we may pass a quiet and peaceable life in all piety and gravity. For this is good and acceptable before God our Savior, Who willeth all men to be saved and to come to a full knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and man, the Man Christ Jesus, Who gave Himself a ransom for all, the testimony in its own times.

Mt 21:33-42: "Hear another parable: There was a certain man, a master of a house, who planted a vineyard, and put a hedge around it, and dug a wine-vat in it in which to press grapes, and built a tower. And he let it out to vinedressers, and went abroad. And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent forth his slaves to the vinedressers to receive his fruits. And the vinedressers took his slaves, and indeed beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent forth other slaves, more than the first; and they did to them in like manner. But afterwards he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' But after the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and let us gain possession of his inheritance.' And they took him, and cast him out of the vineyard and slew him. Whenever the lord, therefore, of the vineyard should come, what shall he do to those vinedressers?" They say to Him, "He will evilly destroy those evil men, and will let out the vineyeard to other vinedressers who shall render to him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus saith to them, "Did ye never read in the Scriptures, 'The stone which the builders rejected, this became the head of the corner; this came to be from the Lord, and it is marvellous in our eyes'?"

Lk 4:16-22: And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and according to what was customary to Him, He went into the synagogue on the day of the sabbath, and stood up to read. And there was handed over to Him the roll of Esaias the prophet. And having unfolded the roll, He found the place where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, on account of which He annointed Me; He hath sent Me to preach the good tidings to the poor, to heal those who have been broken in heart, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth in deliverance those who have been broken in pieces, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." And after He folded up the roll, He gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were looking intently on Him. And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture hath been fulfilled in your ears." And all were bearing witness to Him, and were wondering at the words of grace which were proceeding out of His mouth, and were saying, "This is the Son of Joseph, is it not?"

Some quick thoughts I had as Reading these on Sunday ...

In the first Gospel for the Liturgy we have a parable of us.

God gives us things and in time we start to think things are ours and only concern ourselves and not the master.

God sent prophet after prophet and then he sent his own Son and the people killed him too.

The second is great, because Jesus announced that he was the Christ, the Son of God and Son of Man.

Paul to Timothy: "For this is good and acceptable before God our Savior, Who willeth all men to be saved and to come to a full knowledge of the truth."

God wants all men to be saved and to come to fully understand truth (insofar as men are capable). Salvation and knowledge are infinitely more important than anything else as they are the very reason that we exist. Knowledge both gets us to, and allows us to reside in, that salvation. When we lack anything good, it is our own fault. God will always give that which is best for us, so if we do not have that which is best for us at any particular time, it is because of a mistake on our part. This shows the absurdity of telling God what he must give us, as though we know better than he. He already gives us that which is best, that which leads to salvation. Does the God that is love give a stone instead of bread? No! He gives only good gifts, being the God who is only good and only love, and the only lover of mankind. Even our misfortunes must be viewed in this way, for it may be through misfortune that we come into divine paradise. God does not say he will always save us from misfortune; quite the contrary, He (and all the Fathers affirm this) says that we must be tested by fire, that we must toil, that we must struggle and seek and grow. It is His will that all would be saved; yet most will choose the darkness over the light. Most of us (on this forum) probably do this on an hourly (if not minute to minute) basis. We love the dark. We are the stalactites in the cave of sin that will eventually fall into the chasm and never see light or love or truth again. Or rather, we will know one truth: that we will never be close to God; and we will know one light: the fires of hell; and we will know one love: that love which we can never fathom or experience in even a small way.
