The Unabbreviated Horologion or the Great Horologion?

Post by Daniel »

The Unabbreviated Horologion (Jordanville) or the Great Horologion /b: I'm debating on which one of these to get.

Does any one have any experiance with either of these two? (OOD has mentioned the Great Horologion.)

How do they compare as to content?

I'm not too concerned with the differnces between Russian/Greek usages, so that's not an issue.

ps-if I picked the wrong forum, please feel free to move it.

Uh! I don't remember hitting the submit button. The last thing I remember was some message from Microsoft popping up on the screen and all the windows I had up closed and I thought I lost the post. Oh well, now that it is there, does any what any comments on the two Horologions?

Daniel,

I have the Great Horologion and the Horologion by St. Tikhon's (I don't have Jordanville's). From a quick glance, clearly HTM's has much more. I'm pretty sure the HTM's calendar related material is far more complete, I'm not sure if St. Tikhon's even has one. For instance, HTM's contains the Synaxarion readings for each day of the year, and also the troparia and kontakia appointed for each day. St. Tikhon's has nothing.

One think to note to, HTM's follows Roman (Greek) practice while Jordanvilles follows the Russian. This is important to the extent you plan to use it.

HTM's is also much nicer in size and readability, with 5 colored page ribbons and acid-free paper. I believe it is also more expensive.

Unless the Russian is important to you, and you can afford it, HTM's would be hard to regret.

Sorry I couldn't help more about the specific content.

Thanks OOD!

Honestly,I hadn't even concidered St. Tikhon's mainly because I forgot they had one.

From what I have seen the Jordanville Horologion is about $40 and the one form HTM is about $120.

I get the same thing. I also got the same thing at oc.net when Nik was started designing the portal there and at yourcatholic.com, Nik's former forum of now infamous memory. I also get it at Nik's blog and at Stanosheck.com. I think it is because he does not design his pages using Internet Explorerer. Is that what you use Daniel? does any other IE users have the same problem?

I have Explorer, and come to think of it I've had the same thing happen before on another forum, but that time the post was lost. Normally if I know it will take awhile for me to type a post I do it in Word and then cut and paste.
