RED AURORAS

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Who needs fireworks with all these natural auroras?

Here is a red aurora from the Northern USA entitled, "Aurora on Ice" and taken by John Ashley on January 3, 2016 from Polebridge, Montana.

He writes:

Northern lights put in a brief appearance before moonrise this morning over northwestern Montana. Light beams over Glacier National Park reflected nicely in the icy North Fork River, at a balmy minus 4F degrees. Aurora was visible for less than an hour, faint enough that I could not detect any color with my old eyes. Camera picked up yellow and magenta but none of our most common color, green. Nikon D750, 25 sec f2.5 ISO 3200.

Aurora on Thin Ice taken by Göran Strand on January 3, 2016 from Östersund, Sweden.

He writes:

Last night I went out to do a long exposure on M42 (Orion Nebula) but the beautiful northern lights got my intention throughout the night. This is a single 15 sec. exposure I did to also bring out some of the detail in the Milky Way. I went out on the ice that just has appeared on lake Storsjön. The ice had some very nice structures to it.

Yes, the Milky Way is beautiful and wonderful to behold. It is very difficult to see with all the city lights obscuring it here in Los Angeles. We must go out to the desert where few dwell if we wish to see it.

Norway is the place to be to see some awesome auroras. This one was taken by Lena Pettersen on "April 1, 2016" from Kvaløya, Tromsø. I think she meant to say "Jan. 1" because April 1, is not here yet.

An aurora with purple highlights is considered to be a red aurora.
