Driverless Cars Expose a Key Flaw w/ almost twice the accidents

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Driverless Cars Expose a Key Flaw w/ almost twice the accidents

Post by Maria »

The glitch?

They obey the law all the time, as in, without exception. This may sound like the right way to program a robot to drive a car, but good luck trying to merge onto a chaotic, jam-packed highway with traffic flying along well above the speed limit. It tends not to work out well. As the accidents have piled up -- all minor scrape-ups for now -- the arguments among programmers at places like Google Inc. and Carnegie Mellon University are heating up: Should they teach the cars how to commit infractions from time to time to stay out of trouble?

No thanks ! I dont want to be on any road where these things are "driving" !!

While humans are getting more and more careless, doing phone texting or whatever while driving, or not even bothering
to look at the road, still, I feel a little better with a human behind the wheel in neighboring vehicles than a robot !

Of course what I would really want is to stay clear of any accidents or accident-prone drivers, human or inhuman !

Their have been cats and dogs who have accidentally engaged a car by releasing the brake and driven it.

The dog driving in your video was trained for that. It's actually a good gimmick to get people to adopt pets
when they see how amazing they can be !

That dog looked amazingly like a human the way its leg rested on the steering wheel as if relaxing on a safe stretch of road.
How it confidently grabbed the wheel and turned it aggressively around the corner was remarkable !

It's true, people should adopt pets wherever they are able.

How to tell the right pet for you ? Well why not use the model of Elder Sebastian I related in another thread when he unerringly described the right girl for a set of Russian parents to adopt in Kazakhstan of the 1950s.
Recall how the parents were absolutely set on adopting a boy to replace a lost son of their own. But the Elder cautioned them to choose a little girl. He even specified how old she would be.

When the prospective adoptive parents arrived at the orphanage, one girl of precisely that age broke loose from the group and tore over to the father, yelling Daddy ! Daddy ! She grabbed his leg and wouldn't let go.

Needless to say, everything worked out perfectly BECAUSE the parents obeyed the Elder's orders. This Elder was the spiritual son of the last main Optina Elder, Elder Nektary. Not a self-proclaimed starets. So, all went exactly the right way for the rest of the lives of this family.

Hence, if a dog or a cat shows affection or runs over to you when you are searching for a possible pet, then... that could very well be the right animal for you !

I think these "Sticklers for the Law" programmed self-driving cars would be fine if everyone was forced to buy them and all non-programmed cars were outlawed. Then there would be no merging issues due to people driving 160 km per hour (or whatever their level of over the limit is) on the freeway. Forcing people to obey the law more is the answer, not programming cars to break the law as well.
