Autumn Leaves - Pretty but dangerous

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Autumn Leaves - Pretty but dangerous

Post by Maria »

Fall is the time when pretty but dangerous leaves fall to the ground. Not only can people suffer a slip and fall on wet leaves (like a banana peeling), but also these leaves are often loaded with mites. So, after you rake leaves, immediately take off your clothing and put it into the washing machine along with detergent and 1/2 cup of Epsom Salt to get rid of these crawling critters. Mites can really cause itching if they get into bed with you. Almost invisible, they are the size of a period (.) produced by a typewriter (font size 6 to 10). Many people are allergic to all crustaceans such as shrimp and mites, which proliferate at this time of year because it is so cool and damp.

However, autumn leaves are a great addition to a compost pile, so do not toss them into the trash.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Excellent warning ! I had never thought of that risk of creepy little things jumping off of leaves. I did rake some on Friday : too bad the Forum was "under surgery" so I did not find out in time to carefully wash everything !

I wonder if this applies in drier climates, too. Do you know, Maria ?

The warning about slippery leaves is a very timely one.
If any of our readers are experiencing frost already in the mornings, that would be a time to be careful with the leaves on the ground.

It would be wise to get the leaves raked before any snow or freezing temperatures, which would make them more slick still.

What do the Epsom salts actually do, Maria ?
I had assumed they were for relaxing in a bathtob and maybe detoxing the skin. I have never used them myself.
Do they get rid of any and all insect life ??
