Greek Orthodox Antiochian Patriarchate ?

Post by Barbara »

I came across this site when searching online for something else.
I figured I might as well put it in the World Orthodox news in case anyone will be benefited to know that a "Metropolitan Bishop" - whatever that is, perhaps on the Greek Archdiocese model of calling the ruling bishop of a city a Metropolitan -
has been selected for a community in the ancient Roman city of York, England.

This is the Lebanese Archimandrite Silouan Oner, who will preside, it looks like, over a "newly created Archdiocese of the British Isles and Ireland".

http://www.yorkorthodox.org/news.htm

I am not up to date on all the divisions amongst the Antiochian Patriarchate. But this name "Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch" was confusing.
Anyone have an explanation ? It's OK if no one knows [or cares much about it !]. I am idly wondering.

This is simply a diocese of the Antiochian patriarchate of John Yazigi. The phrase is one of the way by which the Antiochians identify themselves. I assume it is to differentiate from Syriacs etc.
