Be careful of touching gas pumps

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Be careful of touching gas pumps

Post by Barbara »

Notice how rarely this topic ever appears in the media. It is common sense, however, many people are distracted
so don't notice some of the objects they touch regularly which are breeding grounds for germs.

Besides pumps at the filling station [let's hear it for the old days when attendants did all that for the car's driver !],
of course other areas to carry some sort of buffer when touching would be ATMs [not that I would use one, personally] or
banister rails [think of the LONG, sharply vertical escalators in Moscow Metro stations for those of us who may travel there !].

Notably, it's a Reuters [a slight bit more objective] article which warns about such dangers, rather than American press :

Also, I just thought of the keypads that one often has to touch when running a credit or debit card through for payment for one's fillup. I always use a piece of cloth to touch the numbers. Likewise with touching the selection of octane of gasoline.
These 2 other possible germ areas are not mentioned in the article.

Don't forget to use a rag or anything thick. I don't believe in using Kleenex : it's too thin and tears easily. One needs a heavier cloth, ideally cotton ? Anyone else have suggestions for what fabric would be preferable if one can manage such ?
