Turks flock to venerate Greek Nun's relics

Post by Barbara »

This story was from June 2014, translated from the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet by John Sanidopoulos. I found it when looking up the Feast Day of the Axion Estin Icon. Since this blogger does not allow copy and paste, I am posting the link only.

So the Muslims are so "hostile" to the Orthodox ? Here is some evidence against that widespread premise :

you're kidding, of course. They are not venerating anything. They are gawking at relics the way people gawk at Egyptian mummies. It was probably muslims who killed her in the first place. :ohvey:
Muslims are hostile to anyone who is not a muslim because that is what Islam preaches. To suggest otherwise is not only a sacriledge to those Orthodox who have been martyred at muslim hands but to the christians who are being butchered every day, solely because they are christians.

I was wondering about this nun's death circa 900 AD. Turkish authorities claim she met a violent end. Yes, martyrdom most likely by Muslims.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

It's hardly sacrilege to say that Muslims aren't always attacking Christians. If you wanted to insist that they never attack Christians, then that's something else. But I think Lydia has a point that whatever these Turkish visitors were doing, they weren't "venerating" the nun's relics.

A secular museum is hardly the place for the veneration of icons or relics. If they had brought bouquets of flowers and precious stones to place at her relics, that would have been a different story. Nevertheless, these school children did seem very sober, especially the boys. Let us pray that they will come to Christ through viewing these sacred relics.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

I feel the same way about icons and crosses in museum exhibitions.
