New chemicals added to skin care products

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

New chemicals added to skin care products

Post by Maria »

Below are two chemicals commonly added to skin care products.
With the uproar created by the presence of propylene glycol and the refusal of many consumers to use any products containing propylene glycol, personal care product companies are turning to propanediol as the number one "other" ingredient.

  • propanediol - a sweet colorless, viscous, hygroscopic liquid used as an antifreeze and in brake fluid and also as a humectant in cosmetics and personal care items although it can be absorbed through the skin with harmful effects

    propylene glycol
antifreeze - a liquid added to the water in a cooling system to lower its freezing point
humectant - any substance that is added to another substance to keep it moist

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/propanediol

For example, Jason Natural is one of the many companies with propanediol as the major ingredient.
This is their list of ingredients, notice how Propanediol is listed as the number one ingredient followed by sodium stearate (a chemical used in manufacturing),

  • NO: Aluminum, Parabens, Phthalates or Propylene Glycol

Our Pure, Natural Deodorant is clinically tested to effectively control odor for all day protection. Naturally sourced Zinc Ricinoleate, Corn Starch and Baking Soda neutralize odor while Tea Tree Oil and Grapefruit Seed Extract, known for their antimicrobial properties, help fight odor-causing bacteria.

    Other Ingredients

Propanediol, aqua (water), glycerin, sodium stearate, zinc ricinoleate, polyglyceryl-3 caprate, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) leaf oil, citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract, allantoin, behenyl alcohol, ethylhexylglycerin, glyceryl stearate, silica, sodium bicarbonate, sucrose cocoate, tocopheryl acetate, zea mays (corn) starch, amyl cinnamal, benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, citronellol, isoeugenol, fragrance (parfum)

That still remains a ferocious list of ingredients for a supposedly "natural" product !

I never liked the brand name, Jason, though I saw it glaring out on many shelves in the semi-health food sections of stores.
It always put me off somehow.
Now I know WHY ! At least one reason.

Another might be the use of corn starch which may be from GMO's.

Altogether a huge waste of money. One can avoid use of these expensive and perhaps unhealthy skin care products.
Just use completely natural oils such as olive or sesame on one's face, and that is enough by itself.

For a deodorant, reject the mass-marketing concepts which have brainwashed generation after generation.
One only needs a pure Australian tea tree oil. Or if for some reason, one suffers from sensitivity to tea tree, use "neat", meaning undiluted, lavender oil, which is very gentle on skin.

The truth is that the pores will absorb any unhealthy ingredient which will then be transmitted throughout the lymph and blood : highly dangerous if used every day !

Hence by putting only tea tree or lavender oil, one is helping purify one's system. Also giving a boost to their immune system.

A ton of money can be saved, too, as well as consistent improvement of one's health.

Top choice could be the Tea Tree - Lavender essential oil by Desert Essence. This rare combination of the two is medicinal but softened by the Lavender. Both ingredients are organic. Can't ask for better !

Whereas : what do we know about the tea tree used by "Jason" ? It probably is a low caliber one from China !!
Surely, it's not organic or the list would specify that. A lot of companies cash in on the cachet [!] of popular essential oils. But there are so many in circulation which are adulterated with chemicals or dyes or anything to stretch them.
One has to think that there is a limited crop every year of Tea Tree and true Lavender. Hence how can there be so many products worldwide featuring these and other common oils ?

In contrast, Desert Essence is a reliable brand - and worth its weight in gold when one considers the vast benefits gained by applying it as a deodorant.

Case closed.

Desert Essence has now adulterated their product line too.

It seems that all the companies are caving into pressure to add preservatives and GRAS items that have never been tested but are "generally" considered to be safe (until proven otherwise).

Oh NO! Maria, how did you find that out ??
I am glad, then, that I have still some very old bottles of the Desert Essence Tea Tree Australian oil which were presumably pure.
I am daunted to hear that. Maybe we health people have to change to brands like Simplers Organic Tea Tree, or
the company that I mentioned before as the very tops for authenticity and quality : Original Swiss Aromatics.

Regarding Antifreeze, that was timely. I had just had someone change my thermostat, creating a mess of Antifreeze.
Fortunately, I had metal pans positioned under the car, so most all of the overflow was caught in them.
It is unpleasant stuff anyway. Then to think of it being used in supposedly health care products - shudder, shudder !

Reminder to everyone who reads this : do NOT keep Antifreeze around the house without sealing it up and also
putting plastic bags or other things underneath the container and around it so it doesn't tip over and spill. Pets - strangely enough - like the taste and sadly, will drink it if left out.
Antifreeze will kill the pet, so keep it out far from them.
Remember, even if a few drops are on a floor or cement, they can walk over it, then lick their paws.
Careful cleanup is therefore critical.
