That's interesting about the Trader Joe's manuka honey. I had not known they carried it at all.
Some of their products are clearly substandard. One has to shop selectively at "TJ's".
In fact, I was reading just before this about how honey should not be heated. I think that was about Raw Honey,
Organic type. What Maria said about Carmelized - makes sense.
Should be avoided. I remember catching sight of a new type called Doctor's Choice or something like that,
very costly, at Whole Foods. My sense was that something was wrong with it. That led to research about all of
the major types of Manuka Honey sold here in North America.
I think testing revealed the surprising finding that only some 6 or 7 companies in New Zealand have authenticated Manuka Honey.
None of those are sold here !
Apparently, any company can start a Manuka Honey business, write " Active + 15 " on their label and there is no way
to verify that. It may not be any different than "table honey", posited one pessimistic reviewer.
There aren't any regulations in place YET to actually ascertain which Manukas are real ones.
So one has to keep up every now and then with developments. My feeling is that the major good health food stores will have brands of Manuka Honey which are not frauds - except for that Doctor's one. My instinct was that it was too glitzy looking to be real. But only after researching a little did I realize how tricky it is to find even relatively authentic Manukas. They are great, though, and all reviewers rave about the healing benefits !
The real Manukas are not really sweet ; not sugary as Maria mentioned with the pastes.
