Roundup chemical even in Organic Honeys ?

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Roundup chemical even in Organic Honeys ?

Post by Barbara »

It's why [ expensive ] Manuka Honey from New Zealand may be the only choice.

"Five categories of food items were tested from Philadelphia grocery stores: honey, corn and pancake syrup, soy milk, tofu, and soy sauce. Sixty-two percent of the conventional honeys and 45% of the organic honeys sampled had levels of glyphosates above the minimum established limits.

It's hard to ignore the presence of glyphosate in a large portion of our food supply. Glyphosate is the main ingredient in Monsanto's star herbicide, Roundup. It is interesting to note that the level of glyphosates was much higher in honey from countries that permitted GM crops; honey from the U.S. contained the highest levels."

If one checks online for Manuka Honey, one will find different vendors.

Some vendors are offering very inexpensive "organic raw" Manuka honey in a paste form, but organic raw honey does not come in a carmelized paste form. That paste must have been heated to carmelize it. By the way, I have tasted some of this Manuka paste, and it is delicious, but our taste buds can deceive us because food that tastes delicious may not be good and healthy for us. Obviously, there is a misrepresentation on that label.

Trader Joes used to offer 10+ Manuka honey from New Zealand, which was neither raw nor organic. It was the carmelized paste form without any disclosure on the label that it was paste. Perhaps that is why it is no longer offered on their shelves.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

That's interesting about the Trader Joe's manuka honey. I had not known they carried it at all.
Some of their products are clearly substandard. One has to shop selectively at "TJ's".

In fact, I was reading just before this about how honey should not be heated. I think that was about Raw Honey,
Organic type. What Maria said about Carmelized - makes sense.

Should be avoided. I remember catching sight of a new type called Doctor's Choice or something like that,
very costly, at Whole Foods. My sense was that something was wrong with it. That led to research about all of
the major types of Manuka Honey sold here in North America.

I think testing revealed the surprising finding that only some 6 or 7 companies in New Zealand have authenticated Manuka Honey.
None of those are sold here !

Apparently, any company can start a Manuka Honey business, write " Active + 15 " on their label and there is no way
to verify that. It may not be any different than "table honey", posited one pessimistic reviewer.
There aren't any regulations in place YET to actually ascertain which Manukas are real ones.

So one has to keep up every now and then with developments. My feeling is that the major good health food stores will have brands of Manuka Honey which are not frauds - except for that Doctor's one. My instinct was that it was too glitzy looking to be real. But only after researching a little did I realize how tricky it is to find even relatively authentic Manukas. They are great, though, and all reviewers rave about the healing benefits !

The real Manukas are not really sweet ; not sugary as Maria mentioned with the pastes.

I am glad you posted the link< Maria, for when i saw the picture, I realized that indeed I have some of that type on my shelf !
All this time I was saving it, thinking because it is in glass that it would keep well.

But if it is not that good to begin with, that's deflating.

I see from the automatically generated links that there IS a bran which is on the UMP list "Unique Manuka Factor".
It's called Happy Valley ; actually has just changed the company name.
But the PRICE ! Astronomical !
I think I will struggle along with ECO Bee Active 15 + for awhile longer...

Too many people have found out about the healing benefits of Manuka honey, so that the prices these companies can command are sky high.
