MP Saint Amphilochius of Pochaev ??

Post by Barbara »

I was browsing on wikipedia this morning regarding Pochaev monastery and found this mention.
Do True Orthodox recognize this hieromonk as a Saint, also ?
What is the concensus of True Orthodox Bishops about this purported worker of miracles ?
He reposed relatively recently, in 1971, so maybe no decisions have been made ?

Anyone here happen to have heard about this event 12 years ago this month ?
I hadn't heard a thing.

"On the 12th of May 2002, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church canonized schema monk Amphilochius (Amfilohiy) of Pochayiv. Amphilochius of Pochayiv (in world Yakiv Holovatyuk 1894 - 1971) was born on November 27, 1894 in ... western Ukraine. In 1925 he became a monk and joined the community of Pochayiv Lavra. In 1936, Amphilochius had been given the rank of hieromonk (priest-monk). His healing gifts attracted the attention of many people. Archimandrite of Lavra blessed the monk in this work and allowed him to settle in a little hut near the cemetery. In the summers, the pilgrimage to Amphilochius (then called father Joseph) was increasing, reaching 500 people daily. On the 11 / 12 May 2002, he was canonized by the Orthodox Church after the church commission researched his life. Just before Easter his relics were uncovered fully intact. Over 20.000 Orthodox pilgrims arrived to take part in the veneration of Saint Amphilochius. Many healings took place when people come to touch his relics."

No, the True Orthodox do not recognize Fr. Amphilochius as a saint. His lived and died at the Pochaev monastery, as a member of the MP, in full communion with this sergianist and ecumenist church. at a time when they officially denied the very existence of the new martyrs. There is no record of him ever condemning any of the teachings or actions of the MP or world Orthodoxy. He was undoubtedly a pious man and an exemplary monastic, and struggled sincerely. We can hope that the Lord will be merciful to his soul, especially as he lived in a time when it would have been extremely difficult for him to learn of the truth, let alone confess it. But we cannot venerate him as a saint.

That's so helpful, Mother Evfrosinia ! Thank you.
That's what I was thinking but I wasn't sure.
We can see how various quarters manipulate wikipedia...

I much appreciate this clarification and also that regarding Matrona of Moscow.
I see Rocor-MP parishes mentioning her "feast day" on their calendars.
I am glad I know the truth, due to your explanations in another thread !
