Bishop Gabriel visits Camp NORR

Bishop Gabriel visits Camp NORR (Association of Russian Explorers Outside of Russia)

http://www.russianorthodoxchurch.ws - His Grace Bishop Gabriel of Manhattan, Vicar of the Eastern American diocese, visited the children’s summer camp NORR (Association of Russian Explorers Outside of Russia) on 5-6 of July, 2003.

For four consecutive years, Vladyka Gabriel has come to camp: he visits with the instructors and counselors, spends time with the youth, takes part in camp life. This year NORR is operating its 37th summer camp in the Catskill Mountains in the state of New York, where there are over 100 youth (campers and counselors) and about forty instructors and support personnel.

During the All-night Vigil in the St. Peter and Paul chapel, the camp choir sang prayerfully and with great feeling, under the direction of Tamara Miloradovna Joukov. Most of the campers went to confession. The camp’s spiritual father, mitred Archpriest Alexey Ohotin along with deacons Dimitri Temidis and Alexandre Antchoutine, celebrated the service. Vladyka emerged for the polyeleos.

After vigil, Vladyka met with the older campers and counselors and spent over an hour and a half in discussion with them. He answered many questions. At the request of the youth, the discussion was held without the presence of the parents or senior staff. Based on comments from participants afterwards, Vladyka’s session made a significant impression on the youthful participants.

The clear sunny Sunday morning foretold the beginning of an excellent day. Vladyka Gabriel served the hierarchical Divine Liturgy, which was concelebrated by Fr. Alexey Ohotin and Deacons Dimitri Temidis and Alexandre Antchoutine. The large number of communicants created a solemn, festive atmosphere. In his sermon, Vladyka Gabriel spoke to the campers and guests, underscoring the importance of Russian Orthodox people to continue to preserve their heritage and to serve as an example to all, by their actions and behavior wherever they may be.

Vladyka presented gramatas to Fr. Alexey Ohotin, the dedicated spiritual father of the camp for over thirty years, and to Vassili Feodorovich Joukov, the experienced head of NORR and founder of the camp in North America in 1967. Vladyka pointed out how essential and important it is to work with and develop our Orthodox youth, especially in these times. Upon receipt of his gramata, Vasilli Feodorovich said to the staff, that although he was the recipient, this honors the work of all.

After breakfast, the entire camp gathered for a group photo with Vladyka. Vladyka spoke briefly to the campers, stating that he was very happy to be in NORR again, and he expressed the hope that next summer he would be able to extend his stay. In parting, Vladyka treated the camp to a frozen dessert.

Feast-day in the Australian Capital

Feast-day in the Australian Capital

http://www.russianorthodoxchurch.ws - 9 July 2003 - This year, the parish feast-day, the Nativity of St John the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, fell on a Monday; however, its celebration was transferred to Sunday, July 6th. On Saturday, July 5th, His Grace Archbishop Hilarion of Sydney, Australia and New Zealand arrived for the vigil service. Hieromonk Macarius of Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Protodeacon Herman Polorotov, and Deacons Vadim Gan (from Sidney) and John Bots (from Kiev) also came.

Last year (the parish's jubilee year), Vladyka Hilarion served several times; but this year only on the parish feast-day itself. Meanwhile, the construction of the church hall has been nearly completed, and the church school is in the second year at its own premises. For some, the church hall has become a Russian cultural center: various meetings are held in it, among them a series of lectures on literary themes. Under the able guidance of the former warden, Nicholas Alexandrovich Borodin, all the work on the school construction has been finished, and the necessary social center is already bearing fruit.

The all-night vigil was served by the parish's rector, Archpriest Alexander Morozov, assisted by Protodeacon Basil Yakimov and Deacons Vadim Gan and John Bots. The parish choir, which chanted the vigil, was augmented by singers from Sydney. The choir was directed by Liudmila Vasilievna Yakimova.

On Sunday, the Blessing of the Waters was performed by Archpriest Alexander and Deacon Vadim, and proscomedia by Hieromonk Macarius and Deacon John. Archbishop Hilarion was greeted with solemnity.
The Divine Liturgy proceeded in a prayerful and dignified manner. This was noted in particular by the Russian consul, who attended the divine services. At the Little Entrance, Archbishop Hilarion, in accordance with the resolution of the Synod of Bishops, awarded to Archpriest Alexander, the rector of the parish, the right to wear the palitsa. After the Liturgy, a service of supplication, with procession, was served, and the sisterhood provided a festal banquet for those who attended. The clergy and faithful were reluctant to depart, prolonging their fellowship in Christ.

O holy John, prophet, forerunner and baptist of the Lord, pray to God for us!

    New Website for Novo-Diveevo

A website has been launched for Novo-Diveevo Convent, which includes schedules and information on the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the glorification of St. Seraphim of Sarov in the Eastern American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia: http://www.novo-diveevo.org

FROM DECREE No. 6/2003 OF HIS GRACE KYRILL,
BISHOP OF SAN FRANCISCO & WESTERN AMERICA

100 years ago, a special event took place in Holy Russia--the Tsar-Martyr Nicholas, together with the clergy and faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church, glorified a great God-pleaser: a wonderworker, prophet and ascetic, our holy and God-bearing father, Saint Seraphim of Sarov. St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco writes of this event: "On July 19 (new style: August 1), 1903, all of Russia was filled with hymns of praise, glorifying God and His pleaser. Indeed, all of Russia rejoiced then, as on Pascha..."

All of us, dear in Christ, are children of the Russian Church and remain faithful to the ideals of Holy Russia. One hundred years after the Finding of the relics of Saint Seraphim and his glorification, we continue to pray to this wonderful saint for help, we continue to gather spiritual strength, to rejoice and to receive comfort from his life and by his prayers. I greet you dear co-pastors, brothers and sisters and children with the 100th Anniversary of St. Seraphim of Sarov's glorification.

Those who saw the Sarov celebration with their own eyes are no longer with us, but the spirit of Saint Seraphim is alive and we must try to feel it, to preserve it, to multiply it. Our Western American Diocese must mark this spiritual Jubilee in a worthy fashion!

I. I announce a special All-Diocesan Celebration-Pilgrimage on Saturday, August 2, 2003 at the St. Seraphim church in Seaside (Monterey), California. August 1 is a weekday, so I am transferring the Feast of St. Seraphim to the following day, a Saturday. An old icon of St. Seraphim with his relics will be brought to Monterey for the Pilgrimage. On Saturday, August 2, the Divine Liturgy will begin at 9:30 AM and will be followed by a procession. Following the Liturgy a meal will take place outside, similar to how our Orthodox ancestors in Russia marked pilgrimages. A special Word of Praise to St. Seraphim will be compiled and read during the meal. At 4:00 PM all will take part in the chanting of the Akathist to St. Seraphim and at 5:00 p.m. the All-Night Vigil (eve of Sunday) will be served. Vestment color for the Pilgrimage is green.

II. Due to the solemnity of the Jubilee, I give my blessing to all parish Rectors who will be coming to Monterey for the St. Seraphim Pilgrimage to cancel the Saturday night vigil service in their respective parishes.

III. Father Rectors, I ask you to announce to your parishioners (in a timely fashion) the upcoming Pilgrimage and call upon them to take part in this Celebration. It would be best for parishes to organize a bus trip, so that everyone can be together, to St. Seraphim's church in Monterey.

IV. Father Rectors, please dedicate at least 1-2 Sunday sermons to St. Seraphim and his Glorification, so that your parishioners would understand the significance of this great Saint... May our Lord, by the prayers of our Holy and Godbearing Father Seraphim, spiritually strengthen us, motivate us and send us joy - that joy, which overflowed from Batiushka Seraphim.

His Beatitude Patriarch Eirineos Visits Gethsemane Convent on the Feast Day of St. Mary Magdalene

A church feast day is always a double holiday, accompanied by many labors and worries. For the holiday shows the face of the convent. This year, the feast day of our Convent's saint, Mary Magdalene, Equal-to-the-Apostles, was celebrated with a particularly elevated spirit, with a large gathering of Orthodox Christians and guests from all over Jerusalem. The celebration was officiated by His Eminence Mark of Berlin and Germany, traveling from Munich. He was joined by Hieromonk John Smelc, Priest Peter Sturm and Deacon Andrei Sikoev. ...

The Russian Orthodox Youth Committee Turns 35

Many members of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, even those in Russia, have likely heard of the Russian OrthodoxYouth Committee. The ROYC was established with the blessingof the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outsideof Russia, His Eminence Metropolitan Philaret of blessed memoryin 1968. The main goal of the ROYC was to help the young generation, and all Russian Orthodox people abroad in general, learn thehistory of Russia, its culture, and also to gain a deeperunderstanding of their Orthodox faith, which colored the world-viewof the Russian people. ...

They said they have two main sources of income, one being "voluntary donations from Russian people."

American converts can't give, eh? :?

I don't mean that to be divisive or to make it some type of "converts vs. cradles [or Russians]" thing.. I'm just confused.
