How Far is "Too Far"?

Well, we all know what you want in a wife.
What are you willing to give her?

Whatever money I can make with my 4 year bachelor's degree in English Composition that I am pursuing, all of the love and cherish-ment my heart can give, my best attempt to satisfy and give her what she wants in the marriage bed, and a heretical although extremely close knit lower middle-class Mexican family that would try to do all it can to help us and make her feel comfortable as a new part of our family.

Have you discussed your options with a school counselor? There is a glut of teachers in California.

I was contemplating a degree in English literature and composition, but when I saw the reading list, I was appalled. If you are trying to remain pure, yet must read all the suggestive novels mandated on the course reading list, it will be very difficult as the class discussions are far from modest. Trust me. I have talked with young men who are trying to obtain a major where they will not be tempted. Here is a list of their suggestions:

The sciences: chemistry, physics, physical geography, earth science, mathematics

The humanities: World history, American history, Russian history, linguistics, philosophy

Incidentally, linguistics, physics, anatomy, audiology, and advanced mathematics go together nicely.

Well, I'm trying to go with something I enjoy, and English is really it. I like writing and grammar. I didn't know about the suggestive literature required. I never thought about being tempted by pursuing this major. Wow. Another way the world will try to tempt me into wickedness. Anyhow, do you have anymore marriage advice for me?

You sound like a fine young man! I pray that God will give you the wife you desire.
One thing though, unless you plan to become a professional writer, a B.A. in English isn't worth much in the world today.
As for "how far is too far?', the best advice is, while you are getting to know a girl, never be alone together in a private place. Don't give yourself an opportunity to fall.
Remember that, as a man, you are expected to protect, guide and honour women.

What exactly is linguistics? And how did you know when your husband was the one?

I know your question is for Maria, but I'll butt in, anyway...
I took two years in Linguistics; it is the study of speech, more from a physiological and grammatical standpoint. It's interesting, but not easily translatable(!) to a job. For instance, Grammar is actually hard-wired in different parts of our brains.
If you are at all inclined, trades are very reliable and lucrative means of making a living. Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc.

My husband and I fell in love at first sight. It sounds corny, but that's what happened.

Wow thanks I hope I meet my wife that way. I really need God's help though because I have social anxiety disorder and I'm not good around the opposite sex. I'd even help take care of her family the best I can if they needed economic aid, because I know a lot of Orthodox in America are immigrants that are somewhat poor. I'll do anything for an Orthodox wife that meets my two requirements.

If a person is qualified, they can find great jobs in the educational or governmental areas of forensic linguistics, philology (C.S. Lewis comes to mind), anthropological linguistics, biolinguistics, clinical linguistics and/or speech pathology, computational linguistics, critical linguistics, developmental linguistics, ecolinguistics, educational linguistics, ethnolinguistics, geographical linguistics, mathematical linguistics, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, quantitative linguistics, statistical linguistics and sociolinguistics. The field of teaching English as a Second Language is quite impacted as those with an MA in English and a certificate in TESL dominate that field. In the military, linguists are in high demand.
