Telemarketers Evading DoNotCall list may have brakes

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Telemarketers Evading DoNotCall list may have brakes

Post by Barbara »

"The federal do-not-call database was supposed to protect consumers from annoying telemarketing calls. There’s only one problem – fraudulent telemarketers ignore the list and make billions of robocalls pitching scams and con games.

Overwhelmed regulators are turning to technology for part of the answer. A new service opening on Sept. 30, called Nomorobo, can block most telemarketing offenders."

One answer I use is "Russlandgeheimdienst, Oberstleutnant Rossokovski."

The German tranaslates as "Russian Secret Service, Lieutenant Colonel Rossokovski "

This by "Robert" was a comment after the article.
I thought it was funny.
Though is it a Polish name he chose, rather than a Russian one?
At least it was an original remark by someone who might be of German background to
cleverly put off telemarketer callers.
Though he could have said "KGB " or "FSB" - maybe he didn't want to risk a call from ...the FBI !

Hi Barbara,

Your thread has been moved into Miscellaneous.

I am glad that you started this thread. We must get at least 10 unwanted calls per day from carpet cleaners, to air duct cleaners, political surveys, home repair "contractors" and others.

I still get those calls from Rachel who claims to have urgent news about my credit card accounts. That gal and her scam are from across the sea. Even though the authorities have sited her and her gang, they are back.

And then there is the Pakistani who keeps calling to say that my Windows program is not working and that he wants to fix it. I do not even use Windows. I hang up on him after telling him that I am aware of his scam operation. Then he dares to call me back and say that he is for real. Really? A gal from the UK bought the line about her Windows program and gave away $250 to that Pakistani. Then she discovered that he inserted a fatal virus, so she had to purchase a new computer. She could not get her money back, and add injury to insult, he double charged her.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.
